pmiller
Hi All, I've got an 8 month old CKCS. I've just returned from a 3 month overseas trip and have been amazed at how much he has grown. He looks gorgeous! The other thing I've found is how quickly he has taken to me again...there just has not been an issue. Dogs are loyal to whoever provides the walks and food I suppose?! Anyway, his eyes have always teared a little bit, but they are tearing a lot at the moment. On top of that, the smell is pretty awful. It was recommended to clean the eyes with some salt water. It has been a week or so now and nothing has really improved. Anyone experienced this problem? Trip to the vet?
persephone
If it smells, and seems more than usual- yep- vet visit would be a good plan
becks
It could be eye lashes growing towards the eye making him tear more, or maybe an environmental allergy. Worth having a vet rule things out and see what treatments are available
Tassie
Yep - I'd say vet too. I never muck around with eyes more than a day or so - too much risk of permanent problems. Last time I took my pup in I was very apologetic, saying I was wasting the vet's time - but he was glad I'd brought the pup in - some ointment cleared up the problem quickly. SmoothieGirl
Vet trip first port of call. My vet suggested cleaning eyes with a cotton pad dipped into Chamomile Tea (cool of course). Bronte has one eye that can sometimes get teary. Apparently eye specialists use the tea regularly as it has soothing qualities. Nope my vet isn't 'barking' mad, she was serious. pmiller
Thanks for the replies. Visited the vet this afternoon. She put iodine in his eyes to see if there were any scratches and also looked at his eyelashes. All was clear there. So, he has been given a 10 day course of drops, 3 times a day (she thinks it is an infection). This is going to be fun! Shel72: Interesting about the chamomile. Bilbo Baggins: Haven't thought of showing him. He is a bit of a looker though if I do say so myself! This photo was taken a couple of days ago... luvsdogs
Thanks for the replies. So, he has been given a 10 day course of drops, 3 times a day (she thinks it is an infection). This is going to be fun! What were the drops called? Tilba had sore eyes with a coloured discharge. The vet prescribed a prednasone ointment. To me it didn't help terribly much. I took her in twice. She said it was very mild & wouldn't harm her eyes. I wasn't comfortable using it. The redness went away, vet said she was allergic to something especially as a couple of weeks later she had a sore ear, but she still has a crusty eyes every day. The vet said it was sleep & normal. pmiller
It is actually an ointment called Tricin. He's been on them for 2 and a half days and already looking sooo much better. Like Tilba, Shiraz always had a bit of eye poo, but it really was getting quite icky and smelly. Got another 8 or so days of this to go so here's hoping it clears up. luvsdogs
Keep us posted on the results. I'll be interested if it clears up completely. I never noticed any odour on Tilba's eyes, only the usual doggy odour sometimes.
