Bow Wow Posted July 19, 2009 Share Posted July 19, 2009 (edited) I have been looking at buying a DSLR for a while now, but money is a big hurdle ( isnt it always ) Have been looking at Canons and have decided on the 1000d. But instead of getting one with the kit lenses, I have decided to get just the body and a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens, because by reading other peoples posts have noticed that people dont end up using the kit lenses or they are not happy with them. Have come to the realization that the 50mm is a very popular lens and very versatile. These two are costing me $850, is this good??? Any feedback would be great thanks :D edited to add that I am only after a camera for hobby purpose. But want sharp, focused photos. You are right though, kit lenses are a good start, but nothing more... I'm sure you'll find yourself getting zoom lenses soon though, but a prime to start... wow! It's a cheap lens and while yeah, it's ultra sharp and great for the money, it can also be VERY inconsistent with focus. It also means you're limited to one focal length only. If I were you I would get the kit lens. It isn't too bad and at least you will get a feel for what focal lengths suit you. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm mostly photgraphing the greys, so prefer something zoom so photo's are more natural. I would love to have really "good" gear, but the kit lenses are fine for what i need. I agree with Tess you will be much happier to have the kit lense as well as the 50 mm you will have a lot more photo ops with both, you would have been very limited with just the 50mm. I think I have been reading too much about how no one uses them and being on such a tight budget, thought I would be better off without them. It is good to get good feedback about them and that you are getting great photos with them. After reading your replies I went searching flickr for photos taken with kit lenses and I have to say there are some brilliant photos out there. Um, tlc, I actually do not know what lens comes with it, except that it states it comes with an EF kit lens. I have no idea what that means. I am so looking forward to receiving the camera and can not wait to start learning all about what it does. But I am feeling VERY guilty over spending this sort of money on myself. After I received the email saying they did not have the camera in stock, I thought it was a sign that I should not be buying one. I have wanted a DSLR for ages, but have a real issue with buying such expensive stuff for myself. But hubby was adamant and my son has kindly offered me some money to put towards it, so I figure I cant argue with all of them. So soon I hope to flood the photo forums with lots of piccys. I remember when I first got mine got it home and it was missing the battry charger and couldnt get back to the store till the next day. I was so disappointed!! They sent me a 2gig card instead of a 4 gig, so they are sending me out the bigger one and I will return this one. But that is ok, my son has a big sdhc card that I can use.
