Need A Vet Open On Sunday

Hi

Does anyone have a really good vet that is open on sunday. My puppy is in a lot of pain with his back leg and screaming in pain if you pick him up. He is reluctant to move and not eating. I saw a vet on Friday night (not my regular vet who is away on holiday) but he just thinks it is a sprain. He gave him a cortisone injection which helped but tonight he seems worse. I don't care how far i have to go if it is a good vet. I live in south west sydney. I would like to get him xrayed and i want to see a vet that it not going to just fob me off. Any ideas please.

Quakers Hill, see Matt if he is in, he is absolutely awesome with our pup (we were just there today for vacc with our 15 wk old lab).

Just while we were there today, a random person rang up and asked for some advice (the vet nurse came in) - and he was great with his advice to pass on ... he is patient, calm and very understanding.

I hope your pup gets better quickly !

Is there not an emergency vet you could see tonight???

look here

Going to the vet tonight would certainly be preferable, but if that is not possible, do you at least have any painkillers you can give him tonight? It would be horrible if he's left in so much pain overnight. If the vet didn't give you any painkillers, please at least ring an emergency vet and ask if you can give him aspirin (NOTE: NOT panadol or disprin or nurofen, but pure ASPIRIN) to get him through until tomorrow.

If he's still very painful tonight then I would get a vet check up tonight.

Cortisone is a potent anti-inflammatory but it has no analgesic effects. I would not recommend giving aspirin (a NSAID) concurrently with a steroid - this is contraindicated and even a short acting steroid injection would have a wash out period of 2-3 days. If he's in constant he needs a vet visit tonight and adequate pain relief (which would likely be an opiod). Otherwise an early visit tomorrow morning.

According to the OP the pup is screaming in pain when picked up. Not suggesting the pup doesn't feel anything in between times, but if it can at least be comfortable enough to sleep then wouldn't it be better to avoid more drugs in the system when we don't even know what the problem is? The pup's already had a dose of cortisone bombard its system. In the absence of Veterinary knowledge that can tell what is actually going on, I don't think the pup should be dosed with more drugs.

Not to mention that perhaps there is some damage to ligament or whatever. Stopping the pain might only lead the pup to doing more damage to it by moving around in a way that it shouldn't.

Just my 2c.

ETA: Wrote this as Rappie was posting.

That's why I said ring the vets to check if aspirin could be given :( I'd never suggest that anyone give any dog any medication without the advice of a vet.

Erny, yeah the pup is screaming when picked up, but is also reluctant to move and not eating. Both would signal to me that he is in pain, just not screaming about it until it gets unbearable.

I think that he should be fine until the morning. I carried him out to the do a wee and then put him back in his crate. He had a drink of some lactose free milk with a bit of porridge in it (his favourite) and has now gone to sleep. So i think he should be okay until the morning. I think the steroid injection has made him feel a bit happier today but I definitely think he needs further investigation and some pain relief. I think it is a good think that he wants to stay in his crate away from the other dogs although it is a bit distressing as watch as he is usually so playful and active. We don't seem to have any good after hours vets around here. They all close at 5pm which doesn't help when you work even getting in for vaccinations is difficult, has to be a saturday morning.

Thank you for that. I just want him to be better. I miss his happy little face. He seems quite peacefully asleep at the moment. I have a few options for tomorrow so i will get on the phone first think and sort it out.

Gill's at Austral are not open Sunday but their other surgery at Canley Heights is open 10.30 -1.30 on Sunday. Ph: 9604 9792 first because they are supposed to be by appointment only but they will fit in an emergency.

Thing, Aussiedogs, it's "things". "Think" is something you do with your brain.

But I really didn't post to write just that ...... it's always a worry and I hope your pup will prove to be fine. A couple of months ago my boy (who would have been about 10 mo at the time) showed signs of a sore back leg. Through the afternoon and evening it escalated to him screaming whenever he went to lay on his right side. Laying on his left was a bit better, but I had to help him. He could walk around but you could clearly see his lameness. It was awful as I felt so helpless. It proved to be a bad cramp, from what we could make out. A trip to the specialist and also to the chiro found no other plausible explanation. I was relieved as I was thinking cruciate, HD and so on. Sometimes the worry of not knowing is worse than what it might be. Hang in there until tomorrow. I'm glad he's able to sleep.
