biker girl
Thanks Ptolomy & Leopuppy for your answers regars to my girl moving on her change of position I have another question to ponder in regards to the seek back exercise.......... Our local club is having it's double trial soon & I am planning on entering my girl in her first UD trial The club is running only one ring for all classes & am wondering am I confusing Seven with too many "layers" from me heeling my other dogs from novice & open????? The morning trial is not an issue as UD is before open & novice & I am more concerned to the afternoon trial

Then you shouldn't have too much trouble with the seek back. As Seven gets more experienced she will start to search for the fresher scent. How is every thing else going in your UD trianing? biker girl
Thanks Kallistar (thumbs up) I am really pleased how quickly Seven has picked up UD, considering we have only been seriously training for the past 2 months & that we are doing it on our own Our first UD trial is six weeks off & I realistically entering it as a training session, to see where Seven is at & to have some new/fresh eyes to examine what we are doing
Tassie
I guess it depends how solid Seven is on her seek back. If you're concerned, you could try it out in training to see what happens. When I had my Sam in UD, I was at my then club, mowing the UD ring ready for an upcoming trial with an ordinary motor mower. You can imagine how many times I walked up and down the ring behind the mower. Anyway when I'd finished mowing and started to do some training, I wasn't going to try the seek back but then I decided to give it a go just to see what would happen - but with no pressure on the dog. Just did a simple pattern - and Sam nailed it - good boy. So I guess they're working on the principle of hottest handler scent. Mind you, Sam was pretty experienced by then. Ptolomy
I guess it comes down to - does your dog hunt for the seekback by sight or by smell??? If it is smell then it might make it hard - if its by sight then it wont be an issue. All my kids do it by sight and resort to smell if they can't find it. In WA its not an issue as our trial rings are like bowling greens.
biker girl
Thanks Ladies So far Seven's seek back is becoming very consistant Tassie, our first UD trial there will be no pressure for Seven, as you know, we just don't have the number of trials down here to wait till the dog is performing 100%.......or even mock trials to "see" where our dogs are with their exercises in a "trial" situation I realised a few moments ago, it's been over 20 years since I was in the UD ring with my Cardigan Corgi
Seita
I know someone who used to set up the obedience ring and then trial in that same ring afterwards and the dog had no trouble what so ever in finding the seek back... I think dogs tend to follow the hottest scent? I use the same UD articles all the time so they are sure to all smell like me but she still manages to find the right one. And same with seek back, I do it my backyard and I've probably walked over that yard soo many times but she still finds the seekback!
