Winterpaws
Sorry to start another thread on this but wanted one that was specific to this treatment I am wondering if anyone has used this implant for bitch incontinence and how long after it was implanted before you saw an effect We ended up going this route for Tina and she had the implant on Monday night, so far there has been no change and her bedding is still soaked through every morning ;)
Winterpaws
Nobody has used this?
Stitch
Sorry, I know nothing about using this for female incontinence - I thought it was a male animal contraceptive implant, at least that is what is usually used for. Perhaps it comes under the heading of 'hormonal treatment' for incontinent bitches which I know isn't always successful. I should imagine that hormones would have to build up in their system before you would see any reduction in symptoms - what did the vet who did the implant say? Rappie
I haven't personally used this treatment on any of my patients, but one of our nurses has had one put in her dog with good effect. I would expect it to take up to 2 weeks before starting to see any effects from the implant. It's not one of the registered uses for Suprelorin but its certainly mentioned in the literature from Peptech and I beleive they are working on a registration claim for female urinary incontinence. Erny
Oh - this is very interesting. Sorry WP, I'm of no help to you as until you posted I didn't realise it could be used to help female incontinence (even though it isn't registered for this use as yet) but I'll be very interested to hear back from you as to the results of its effects with your girl. Hope it does help.
Golden Rules
I have a friend who's Dobe suffers from incontinence, she's at her wits end with it so I will be interested also to hear how you go WP.
Winterpaws
Well we had a dry night last night which was fantastic but then this afternoon she wet through her bed again... I'll wait another week and do an update to let everyone know how it goes Rappie I read somewhere (cannot remember where) that if it is not effective then the combination of Suprelorin and Propalin could be the way to go... It's a lot to be throwing at her system
Rappie
WP - I haven't had to use Suprelorin and Propalin concurrently, but I would hope that there was some synergystic effect where in combination the Propalin dose might be lower. They have completely different modes of action so there is no overlap between them, but Proplain alone may not be sufficient for urinary incontinence caused by oestrogen deficiency. Pity we can't get them to do pelvic floor exercises
Erny
WP - had you tried her on the Propalin on its own before? Just interested to know how come you went the implant path. ETA: Sorry - just read in another thread where you say Propalin worked initially, but then became ineffective. No need to respond to the above 'cause I answered my question when I read elsewhere. Winterpaws
WP - had you tried her on the Propalin on its own before? Just interested to know how come you went the implant path. Yes we did. we used it for about 12 months and it was fantastic but about 2 months ago it stopped being effective. On vet advice we increased the dosage (and the number of times a day we administered it) but had no improvement There was another drug option given to us but the negatives for us were that 1 in 50 dogs showed signs of aggression and it was quite confusing on how you had to administer it
Erny
There was another drug option given to us but the negatives for us were that 1 in 50 dogs showed signs of aggression ... Again - interesting (especially for me in my vocational field). Are you able to name this particular drug? Might prove handy for me (and others) to know. Sorry for the 20 questions . Winterpaws
That's Ok I don't mind questions, it's always good for other people to look back and read as well I actually can't remember the name of the other drug I was told so if someone mentions it I can probably confirm it Rappie thanks for your input, I really appreciate it. Maybe I should try doggy yoga
Erny
Thanks WP. I'll be checking back here to read your updates. Hope they report success .
becks
Incurin is one of the tablets available for this (and one that is working for one of my bitches) Stilboestrol is the other one that is sometimes used.
Winterpaws
Just a quick update - no change and changing bedding about 3 or 4 times a day Spoke to the vet today and he said to give it another week and then we need to consider either another drug therapy or look at surgical options *sigh* I'm really not too keen on the idea of surgery, she just had a major operation for intersucception about about 2 months ago and it really knocked her about... I'll update again in a week or so - hopefully with positive news!
Erny
Fingers crossed here that you see some success/improvement inside the next week, WP.
Winterpaws
Well 3 weeks in and absolutely no change and if anything she is probably worse We are running out of options and I am so confused and really have no idea what to do What sort of quality of life is it when you are constantly peeing everywhere
Winterpaws
Just a final update on this. The implant has kicked in and is working. We only get really minor dribbles now and are no longer changing bedding every day (sometimes 2/3 times a day) It probably took at least 6 weeks for it to be effective
sas
Dante's implants could take anywhere up to a month to kick in, might just have to be pateint.
