Is This An Anal Gland Problem?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Since yesterday I've noticed an absolutely foul off smell emanating from Daisy's bum - she's never had this problem before but it's FOUL.

I'm assuming it's an anal gland problem?? She's not licking her bum area or scooting. In fact I don't think I've ever seen her do either. She's fed on a raw diet. The only symptom is the foul stench.

Is it best to take her off to the vet now? I'm really worried about it becoming a regular problem.

I caught her eating a seed from our cocus palm tree recently, and I found one in her poo  Could this be causing the problem?

I wouldn't think the cocos palm seed has any relationship to it although I would try to prevent her eating them anyway. Does she have any fluid noticeably around her anus?

She may have an infection of the sac (they are not actually glands...not sure why they are now called glands) and will need to go on antibiotics if this is the case. One occurrence would not be alarming and I would consider this normal. Even my cat has had an infected sac once.

The sacs may have just expressed themselves naturally though too (not while toileting) and perhpas you have not noticed this before? It usually happens quite regularly and I would think for most dogs, it would occur at least once a day.

My girl had infected anal glands and showed no symptoms at all. It was only that she went to a Vet Chiro about her pelvis being out and the impaction/infection is apparenly a common secondary symptom of pelvic misalignment.

Id take her to the vet to have them expressed, and she may need antibiotics if they're infected. In the meantime you can increase her raw bones and add psyllium husks to her food to try and express some naturally - at least it can't hurt!

I try to stop her eating them as I'm paranoid about her getting a blockage, but there are so many of them, even when I think I've raked them all up she still finds them ;) I find most of them in her crate so I don't think she normally eats them but I have seen them in her poo occasionally.

I just had a good look at her anus area and it looks a bit damp but not obviously fluidy. Although I've never had this problem with the dogs before so I'm not quite sure what is normal and what isn't :o I noticed the smell yesterday when she was sitting on my lap and jumped off the lounge, and again today when she was sitting with me. It's definitely more than gas as I could still smell a bit of it on my pants

I wouldnt be worried but I would get it looked at.

If there is an ongoing problem they can be removed (according to our specialist). We just lost our boy to an anal sac/gland tumour and knowing what I know now I would keep them closely monitored if it was a recurring problem.

I hope it clears up quickly for Daisy

As always, it is best sometimes to have them looked at just in case.

We tend to notice the secretion more with smaller dogs as they are the ones who usually sit on our laps and also, smaller dog owners tend to give softer foods to their dogs which can cause the feaces to be too soft and the sacs not to be stimulated adequately....although you feed a good diet and Daisy isn't exactly a 'small' dog going by your sig pic

Although popular, regular squeezing of the sacs is actually the wrong thing to do unless they become blocked easily. Squeezing the sacs actually encourages the production of more fluid. Usually a good diet will do all the neccessary workload.

LOL no she's not too small at 17kg :o

I don't often have her on my lap as she generally isn't allowed up on the lounge, but I've been home more in the last week so I have been a bit lazy.

I just sent an email to my holistic vet who did the dogs yearly check up only about a month ago. Hopefully she'll reply soon, although I think I might just take her to the local vet to be on the safe side.

Ok, I've booked Daisy into the local vet tomorrow morning (couldn't get in today). Hopefully my vet will email me back between now and then, if not, hopefully it's a simple thing to solve and it's nothing serious.

Sounds very much like anal glands. Bonnie is def a small dog (3.6kg!!) and I can relate to that foul stench description.

She only gets an "issue" with hers occasionally, then a bit of a squeeze and a wipe and she's all good to go again for the next however many months...

All going to plan he'll come home today(Wednesday) some time this arvo, but it is not set in stone, I'm waiting for an update to see if they think he's ready to come home today. House feels damn empty without him here!

Awww, when I was in this morning I heard a little dog barking and I asked the vet if that was Boo the Cav and she said "What? Boo, no way, he's the most perfect dog you can imagine!" ;) And then she raved about Boo and how good he was and how cavs were all kinds of awesome :(

Daisy only had a little bit of stuff that needed to be expressed, not much at all but enough to create that awful stench  The vet said her poos were firm and she's on a great diet so there's no reason as to why she should be having anal gland problems. So fingers crossed this is just a once off and won't be a regular occurrence :) The vet did offer to teach me how to do it myself if it ever happens again so let's hope that it doesn't

awwwww :) that is lovely, thankyou for asking after him, I'm glad he's being such a good boy, I think he's perfection in canine form, but I'll admit to a certain amount of bias :walkdog:

Good to hear Daisy is fine, hopefully she remains non-stinky and you never have to learn to express them ;) from everything I've read it is gross (smell wise) and I would probably wimp out and pay someone else to deal with it
