Rileys mum
Hey guys. Bit of a nuff nuff question but how does one get into showing dogs? I have shown horses for about 20 years ( Jees I've never really sat back n counted the years. My that's flown by) and have only recently sold the horses for a bit of a break. I have always been interested in getting into showing dogs too though n perhaps now might be the ideal time. I have a 5 month old German short haired pointer who I just adore.... But how do u know what type of dog is show quality? Put me in front of a horse n I can tell if it's any good. But dogs are a whole other kettle of fish. Can anyone just show their dog or does the breeder have to agree? What's the process involved in getting started?? Sorry to hijack. Reading all the posts has got me keen to give it a go ( eventually)
Aziah
Several things first Rileys mum... Did you purchase your puppy from a registered breeder? If the answer is 'yes' is the puppy on Main Registration with Dogs SA? Edited May 27, 2010 by Aziah

Reading all the posts has got me keen to give it a go ( eventually) Ok firstly you would need to probably talk to you boy or girls breeder. Your boy or girl might not be able to be shown for any number of reasons. If they deem him or her to be worthy of being show he or she would have to be put on main registration (if they arnt already) and you would need to join you canine council, for example we have DogsNSW here, not sure what state your in. Then you start entering shows...maybe get some handling lessons? Find a mentor to help and teach you all the tricks of the trade! Hope that helps? Somebody else can probably explain it better than me! ETA oh good Aziah is here shes better with all this stuff than me! Rileys mum
I did get him from a registered breeder but He is on a limited register. Is it a matter of asking his breeder if she deems him suitable or do I make the decision?? Are there any people/instructors in sa I could learn the ropes off or get an opinion on his suitability? Having shown horses I'm realistic about it all and don't want to show him if he's not going to shine positive light on his breeder. I purchased him to do some basic obedience and agility with but showing is just in my damn blood lol.
Gemelo
It will be up to his breeder to make the choice Rileys mum. You could just do what I did if he isnt going on main register and get another puppy! ;)

Nevafollo
Yep I'd definately speak with the breeder of your boy, if he isnt suitable then they may be able to help you with a suitable pup if they have another litter coming up? They also may be interested in showing you the ropes as far s showing goes!

angelsophie
half way there thats awesome. Its great isnt it having other newbies around who just understand what its like to feel a little inexperienced and to share the little "firsts" ;) When tobes titled I heard these guys cheering from different rings about to go in themselves! make it way more enjoyable. Last time we showed for a PM show outdoors it was freezing but way more fun sitting in the cold with friends....even if they do steal your chair and nanna rug!
