Hitting The Ring For The First Time

We had a good morning at the show. Having the only Baby Puppy Dog there, we were lucky enough to be the very first ones around the ring - Number 1  . I needed that extra pressure. Chester got Baby Puppy in Show (uncontested, of course) and Charm got "Best Black & Tan" (a property class award) - again, uncontested. She was beaten in the Minor Puppy Bitch class, but at least it was nice to have some competition in her age group for a change. Being a specialty show there were some beautiful prizes donated, as well as some lovely broad sashes that the kids love!

We really need to get to those Hillsborough training evenings, so we'll see you there next Tuesday. My lack of handling ability sticks out like the proverbial when I'm actually in the ring with somebody else, especially people who've been showing & breeding forever. I think to be fair to my pups (and their breeder!) I need to get a bit better at it. The judge thought Chester's kangaroo gait was very cute, and said "why do they have to grow up" and he managed to actually get about two proper steps in just as we came back to her on the triangle, thank goodness. At least he was friendly on the table, and actually licked the her face.

That was our first time at Erskine Park. It was easy enough to find, and we were able to park fairly close to the ring. There were a few other shows on there today - there were terriers in the ring next to us, quite a few hounds wandering around, and the German Shepherds were over the back in their ring as well.

Deb :)

woohoo an in show award on his first step in the ring ;) way to go :)

we dont have specialties :o not enough of us yet....give it time

As for training even nicky said we're getting better. You've seen us in the ring deb we're the light entertainment! But hey we make a little step in the right direction each time as he is finally getting some of it. When he mucks up next week remind me you did see him walk straight and stand and stack! Nicky has helped us heaps my only complaint about training is tobes and I need it weekly!! but we've just decided to do that anyway. I will go most days this week with him even 20 mins in the ring a day will help him, well it has so far  Oh and I did have a chuckle that your baby licked the judge  we have 100 pecent sucess there lol

Hi everyone!!!

I have to get this out :)

We will attend our first show at the end of the month and now I have butterflies...

I am a TOTAL novice but have a little help from some locals and feel really unprepared but soooooo excited!!

I have a great Miniture Bull Terrier Baby... totally biased opinion( really one of those faces only a mother could love)

I hope the judges don't expect too much of us we are quite the bumbling pair!!!

Hey undecided - what a gorgeous pup! This thread has been great for settling my butterflies so stay in touch and let us all know how you're going.

In my very brief experience judges have been very forgiving of both puppy behaviour AND newbie uselessness (in my case).

You'll have a great time. Just remember to keep it fun for both of you.

Deb :)

Thanks... I was just getting some nerves out!!

I thought the judges would go a little easy on the newbies,

Have a Q? Should I tell them it's my first show when I get in the ring for the first time , or will they guess judging by the scared out of my wits expression!

But seriously I am soo looking forward to begining...

Inform the steward that its your first time in the ring and they will tell you what to do and inform the judge as well.

Sit by the ring and watch other breeds going in and see what the judge is making them do ie. triangle, out and back etc.

I am going to start showing next year with my first pure breed dog so it has been great to read this thread!

The most nerve wracking thing is that my gundog is 2nd in the list and apparently 1st on the list isn't shown here! So my first show I will be first in the ring!

Edited for spelling

Thanks everyone for the congrats.

angelsophie - Taite's attention is because I am holding a bit of chicken, have food in your hand and Taite is your best friend lol.

poocow - He will be in Minor Puppy at the Spring Fair, 20, 21 & 22 November we entered the three days after all.

sammy_ballerina - Yes Taite is often complimented on his spotting and pigmentation. His ribbon is for opposite baby puppy in show at the dalmatian specialty, his sister got Baby Puppy in show, but she always wins against Taite because she has an experienced handler who can stack her lovely, though they both bunny hop around the ring.

I dont run that well either, I have to memorize the ring a bit because my vision isnt great and I am certain I never actually do a proper triangle and my run around is never a circle and when I am asked for the up and back I almost run into the poles lol.

Cavalier - He came second, Taite won baby puppy dog, his sister won baby puppy bitch, they had a run off together and his sister won so Taite got opposite baby puppy in show and his sister got baby puppy in show.

We havent done many shows yet, but the judges I have had have all been very patient and helped me out when I have stuffed up and very pleasant with Taite so it has been rather nice and the nerves arent there as much now, I still get nervous just before going in the ring but not like before my first go, and Taite has gotten alot better we are learning together.

Hey there again. Nice to see the thread with a bit of action :mad

I'm just wondering Bec if it's not too trouble if you get on here between now and tomorrow night if you can leave me a message or something to tell me what the weather is like up there and whether training will be on or not- just don't wanna take the drive up there if there is no need to..

Congratulations!!!! :mad

I think everyone runs funny when you are trying to get a puppy around without it having a tantrum :)

Thanks for the help, we are all set for our first show at the end of the month, just thinking about shade options,

I was going to get an umbrella but having a rethink because a gazebo gives more shade and protection from the elements,

but I think it would be had to manage solo...hmmmm .........any thoughts?

At the moment Quatro stacks himself well ... til we get in the ring and of course he'll roll around biting the leash :D
