Silverblue
We had yet another kitten bought in today in that we had to PTS, poor thing was in a really bad way & there was nothing we could do to help it. BLOODY supermarkets shouldn't be allowed to sell it, or people need to learn to read. Makes me so angry, all to save a few $$$$$
WildatHeart
but some are ok to put on, like frontline and advantage. But, i agree, people should learn to read because i'll vouch they dont know that even some types of dog ones can be used on cats (in correct quantities that is) What are the symtpoms for cats that are dosed wrongly? poor little mite Edited July 11, 2009 by WildatHeart
Silverblue
The flea treatments that people use are the Exelpet ones from the supermarket, they contain pyrethin, which is highly toxic to cats, they go into convolsions & it poison them, not alot survive as people don't realise. Frontline & Advantage can be used but we do not recommend it. Sorry for spelling Edited July 11, 2009 by Silverblue
Miss B
We've had a few of those recently, luckily all have survived.

Sorry for spelling may i ask why you dont reccomend it?(genuine question) as the dog frontline contains less % then the cat active ingredient and the same % as the other active ingredient. ETA: i have been doing this for two years up until four months ago as we dont have fleas anymore Edited July 11, 2009 by WildatHeart
Crisovar
It doesn't matter where the product is sold, if someone is not inclined to read labels thoroughly, or to just wing it and see, then they will use it regardless. Some people simply do not listen or do not retain information even if they are given directions by Vet staff so what do you do. Advantix is a cat killer, I have more issues with it's Name being similar to Advantage and the packing being so similar than where the products can be sourced. Silverblue
wildat heart, you can use frontline for dogs & cats, we just simple don't endorse it, just in case I guess. Crisovar it does matter where you buy it from, there is noone at the supermarket that is going to tell the people NOT to use the products on cats. Bellatrix
So, so sad I always read and research everything about a product before giving it to my dogs.
Miss B
there is noone at the supermarket that is going to tell the people NOT to use the products on cats. Except for the little warning on the packet that says "DO NOT USE ON CATS" People are just too lazy to check these things, and assume everything will be fine. I agree about the Advantix packaging Crisovar, very similar to Advantage and some people do pick it up by accident.

Look I'm sorry, but having spent the past 25 odd years in the Vet industry, I believe it doesn't matter who tells them what if they are that way inclined. If people are too bloody stupid to read labels it wont matter what you tell them in the long run. Come next application time it has all gone out of their heads. Some people will still use products that are unsuitable no matter where they buy them from.
Clyde
I'm not lazy and I can read yet I have accidently applied Advantix to my cat. It was a large dose too He spent almost a week at the Emergency Clinic but is now 'fine'. He is a lot slower than he was and seems more spacey so I've no doubt he suffered some brain damage. Poor cat was seizing for some time before I came home and found him. All the hair down the side of his neck and shoulder had literally worn off from the thrashing of the seizing on the ground. I have 5 pets, some times there are extra fosters. I apply top spots every fortnight. I accidently put the Advantix tube which was left, back in the Advantage box the time I used them last. So when it came to applying them a fortnight later, I was rushing out the door late for something and checked the box, double checked the box again then applied the tube. I should have checked the tube but I didn't. My fault obviously, but I object to being called 'lazy'. I've previously vet nursed so was well aware of the outcome but it still happened. I can remember yelling at the poor nurse in Emergency that of course I wouldn't have applied Advantix as I know better. She was trying to eliminate all possibilities. The next day she made me feel a little better though that one of the vets had actually done the same thing! The packaging is the same and the names are very similar. I'm actually surprised that they don't package them differently. Now when I top spot the cats, I check, double check - do it, then feel sick and go back through the bin to triple check the empty tube.
