shmoo
I had problems with a foster dog recently not being well. My vet gave her antibiotics and just to be on the safe side, put her on Hills Ultra ZD, she was so much better. My old IG, Luigi, had Inflammatory Bowel Disease and was on it for years. I've found that many dogs that I've had don't seem to cope well with raw meat, esp beef or kangaroo. But Luigi couldn't even have chicken, we went through elimination diets and finally he had to have an endoscopy which showed IBD - NO meat protein was safe therefore. It was a long hard path to diagnosis for him and me and I can really empathise with the worry over Sweep, I really hope they can get to the bottom of it all soon. So what diet did Luigi end up on? It really does seem that the red meat has caused this flare up.
ish
One of my GSDs got very sick recently after I changed her dry food to a beef based one, and on top of that, gave her antibiotics in beef mince After we worked out it was the beef making her sick, she ate only chicken and rice for a few weeks to give her tummy a rest and she's now doing really well on Supercoat Sensitive. shmoo
Thanks ish, I am really starting to think that the red meat is the problem. He will be at the vets first thing tomorrow morning. He is keeping water down and licking the Nutri Gel off his gums - no where near as bad as he was last time he got sick, but either way I will have him on a drip for a few days, till the meat clears his system and I can put him on a bland chicken/rice diet forever. shmoo
Just got back from taking him to the emergency hospital. He is now on a drip and they are running blood tests. The vet seems sure that he is diabetic, or worse that he has a pancreas tumor. I am hoping that he is diabetic if anything... Why do they always pick the worse times to be ill!? For just tonight at the emergency vet its going to be at least $600-$
persephone
Shmoo-------*fingers crossed for Sweep*. Not a good night for you
shmoo
Just spoke to the vet, and he had bloody diarrhea last night, is very low on electrolytes, liver is not functioning properly and overall very ill. She has started him on insulin, antibiotics and anti nausea medication. She wants to keep him there for another day to keep running tests and keep a good eye on him - since this is what they do more so than a regular vet. I'm looking at another $300-$500 to keep him there today, but I will figure that out later, right now I just want him to get better.

Longclaw
Bugger bugger bugger. I've been thinking of him and hoping he was improving. Fingers crossed that if he has anything, it is the diabetes rather than the tumor. Are they running tests to try to make a firm diagnosis?

shmoo
Thanks everybody for your well wishes. Sweep is looking better and reacting well to all the medication. If everything goes to plan I will be picking him up at 8am tomorrow morning and taking him to my vet. The two vets have been communicating so the swap over should be easy. shmoo
Just got a call from the emergency vet, he has pancreatitis and diabeties. I will be picking him up tomorrow morning and taking him to the specialist at strathfield and he will get an ultrasound there to check the damage to his pancreas. He is not vomiting and no diarrhea and he isn't too uncomfortable which hopefully means his pancreas is not too bad. All up I'm looking at around $5k for vet bills - not including the last time he was at the vets. This will take me about a year to pay off since I am on a disability pension, but I don't care if I live on rice and bread if it means I get him back.
