yellowgirl
Oh, poor little Sweep . Thanks for putting his pic up Shmoo. Oooh that little face, I can see why he has your heart! It's going to be a real long night for you . QUOTE (shmoo @ 10th Jul 2009 - 05:04 PM) I don't know what to do with myself. What have others done to keep themselves busy in this kind of situation? If one of my furkids is at the vets, I clean and sort. Drawers, cupboards and wardrobes get pulled out, emptied and sorted. One bag for throwing out and one bag for charity, the rest gets put back in its place. Anything that can't run off gets dusted and vacuumed. I also wash everything that belongs to the dog... toys, beds, coats, blankets, etc. My theory is that everything will be fresh and clean for when they come home... because they will come home. I just can't sit still if one of my dogs is away, especially if they are ill, so cleaning and sorting keeps my mind busy and keeps me from freaking out. Please let us know how Sweep is tomorrow. Sending heaps of positive and healing vibes to him. xxx

shmoo
Just spoke to the vet and he is Hyperglycemic. She needs to get a urine sample to test as well, which she is working on. She mentioned that he should go to a specialist, but this will cost upwards of $2000. What does one do when they don't have that kind of money? Missymoo
Aww, Shoo I feel for you Can you use the GE money loan thing at this specialist (they saved my bacon) Keep ur chin up and will be watching thread xox
fifi
Shmoo, did she say why the hyperglycemia ? in dogs its usually (not always) a symptom of an illness, rather than the problem itself. Have they had Sweep on a drip ? Urinalysis may reveal more at your vets. sending huge hugs your way. What sort of specialist has she recommened ? fifi

shmoo
Shmoo, did she say why the hyperglycemia ? in dogs its usually (not always) a symptom of an illness, rather than the problem itself. Thats the part we would need to send him to a specialist for I think. She wasn't exactly sure. I did some reading up and Prednisone can bring it on. Have they had Sweep on a drip ? Yup, he is still on it now and will be until he is stablised. Urinalysis may reveal more at your vets. She did that after I got of the phone the first time this morning and yup loads of Glucose in his urine. What sort of specialist has she recommened ? She hasn't so far. I've decided to keep him there on the drip and once he stops the vomiting she will start him on insulin.

Even though my vet knows me and is super lovely and would probably let me pay it off, I don't think it's fair on her. She said he has perked up a little bit. When she took him outside this morning to do a wee and get the urine sample he was walking on his own and he walked back to her when he was done. I feel much better knowing that, cause when I dropped him off yesterday morning he was hardly able to move himself. My vet said I am welcome to go in if I want to. She is busy but I have been out the back of her practice several times before so she would just let me go on through, I wouldn't need to see her as such. But we both agreed that seeing him might excite him or he might think I am there to take him home. I would rather he rested continuously.... even though I wanna go give him big cuddles and kisses!! I know I will burst into tears too - I keep crying at home.. my vet doesn't need to deal with that on a busy Sat morn!
Clyde
Shmoo, rename this thread with his symptoms. With any 'luck' someone else might have been in the same boat and will have some suggestions which may save the specialist fees. Thinking of you. I really just want him to get all the rest he can. My vet said he is happy and not upset. I've been there before and seen other peoples dogs crying and howling, but my boy is happy when he is around people, even if its not always me. I completely trust my vet too and the nurses are really lovely. Seeing him would only be for my benefit and thats just being selfish, besides, it will only make me more upset that I can't take him home!!
