shmoo
Agreed. I don't mind the diet part - they already eat separately and home cooked meals. It will just mean being more strict about bones for the other dogs - but thats no biggy.
shmoo
Just got back from dropping Sweep at the specialist. The vet there said he is looking very good considering and she hopes he is only there for a few days. He was walking on his own and wagging his tail - the vet said dogs with what he has normally come in screaming in pain or on a stretcher. He will be on insulin and a very strict diet - but all that isn't too big a deal for me. I mostly work from home and the dogs are crated when fed to ensure they eat only their own food. Hoping he will make it to the age of 10 (he is 6.5yrs now). He will get cataracts and loose his eye site, but depending on how soon that happens and how much it affects him will determine if I do the surgery for that or if it's time for him to rest. I had always hoped he would live to 16+ and be a cranky old fart of a dog.
poocow
Shmoo. At least you know whats wrong now and how to proceed. I know what you mean about the age thing, my aim is to get Darcy to 10 and anything beyond that is a bonus. Hes already going grey around his muzzle and hes only 6.5yrs
CavsRcute
Slightly off topic-did you see Sara Goldsmid? They are great at Strathfiled and I'm sure they'll help Sweep.
shmoo
Why do our heart dogs have to be the sick ones Poocow? CavsRcute: Vets first name is Narelle, didn't catch the last name She was very lovely and answered all our question and I feel very confident Sweep is in good hands. I put Sweep on the consult table and he walked across the table to the vet and was wagging his tail! He def liked her.
InspectorRex
Glad you at least know what is the cause of Sweep's illness. They certainly worry us our furkids. Prayers still being said for Sweep to come good soon and live a nice life with you, his Mum
poocow
Why do our heart dogs have to be the sick ones Poocow? I know for a fact Darcy loves to stress me out. My vet thinks the last time I took him in (just last week) was him just doing it to get attention. Edited August 11, 2009 by poocow

shmoo
Thank you everybody! Spoke to the vet tonight and his ultra sound showed up hardly any damage at all to his pancreas which is very good news. His liver is still slightly swollen but that should go down in time. He had a mark of some sort on the side of his tummy wall, but they were not concerned - said it might just be a funny bit of his body and that is just the way he is! He has perked up even more since this morning and if he continues to get better tomorrow she will try him on a tiny bit of food to see if he can hold it down. He hasn't vomited in days, so chances are he will keep it down. The vet there has been SO lovely and so comforting. She has explained everything to me in such detail and made me feel so much better. I just can't wait to get him back!! He looks terrible He was 5.9kilos 1 month ago and yesterday he weighed 3.6kilos. He is just skin and bone. :D Obviously I won't be fattening him up, but I will slowly cover his bones and get him (and me!) on a regular short walk each day for exercise. eta for sp Edited August 11, 2009 by shmoo

Fantastic that his pancreas is relatively unscathed. I hope he continues to improve and can keep down his food tomorrow. It makes such a big difference when you have a vet that really cares, doesn't it? Cares about the dog, and cares that the owner also suffers when the dog is ill. That's a hell of a weight loss in percentage terms. But he's obviously a strong little boy and I just know that, given time and your love, he'll be happy and healthy again

Didn't affect my dog at all as long as she was in her own yard/house. Take her out of her environs and she was lost. A friend of my sister has a blind cattle dog (went blind, not born blind) and he's good too, even on his regular walk as long as they go the same way every time. persephone
We have had blind dogs- and providing things are kept in the same place, and they had their 'routes' clear for travel, there was no problem Blindness is the least of his worries, shmoo..esp if it is a gradual decline.. he will adjust

shmoo
All is good to pick up Sweep tomorrow!! I can not wait!! The vet will be showing me how to give him his insulin and I will purchase some of his new food while I am there. She said he loves the canned food, but not a huge fan of the dry food - but I want him eating at least 1/4 of the dry food so his teeth will get a little cleaning since he can no longer have bones. shmoo
Back on my computer with internet now. He is still doing really well and sucking his food down! Doesn't mind the injections either and they are very easy to give. I just have to accept the fact that I will never sleep in again!!
