persephone
as above.. and.... most important- do NOT fuss too much, and goo&gaa over the pup. Go about the daily routine calmly and efficiently ..and do NOT let pup get away with anything .Today will be a starting point for your long term relationship. The rules you set OR break today will be the ones the pup will remember
Zenith
Best of luck - hope it all goes well with your new addition: My 3 tips would be: * always straight outside to toilet after play or eating or sleeping * consistent training - a cute naughty puppy can = a big naughty adult! * lots and lots of puppy breath Also first day especially I like to keep things rather quiet and give the puppy plenty of time alone or without being bothered too much - I also like them confined to a small area of the house/backyard (eg one room, crate, playpen etc)! poodlefan
Establish routines and stick to them. Regular feeds, trips outside to toilet, training/play time and time to sleep. Get puppy used to being by himself early. He shouldn't have constant attention. I"d recommend crate training. Don't teach or tolerate any behaviour in a puppy that you don't want to see in an adult dog. Mouthing, tugging on clothes, jumping up for attention etc. Dogs don't "grow out of" any behaviours that they find rewarding.
stormie
1. photos 2. more photos 3 yep! even more photos!!!! but seriously, I agree with what the others have said - in particularly, starting as you plan to go and not treating the puppy like its the most important thing in your world. Coming into a new pack, your pup will feel more relaxed if there is a clear leader.
mona
What an exciting day for you !!! My 3 tips would be : * Not too much excitement on the first day - let Pup settle in * Continue with food that breeder has used - to prevent upset tummies * Establish sleeping area * lots of kisses and puppy breath !! Enjoy
Wazzat Xolo
:D :pGive me your top 3 tips for making puppy feel at home and making the move as smooth as possible Enjoy your puppy Remember its a puppy/dog and does not think like us humans (good thing at times!) When not home a radio or ticking clock is good company Always teach them by repetition, praise and reward and end on a good note! BUT best rule ENJOY J
luvsdogs
Congratulations, what did you get & how old? All of the above, plus socialise, socialise, socialise. Puppy needs to meet as many & different kinds of people especially kids & men. Let him experience all the sights & sounds in the house - loud music, banging pots, yard, park - wait for vaccinations b4 you put him on the ground, you can carry in your arms. Get him used to going in the car. My dog travels in a crate & is very good. She was well travelled when I got her. Don't be surprised how much he'll sleep in the 1st couple of weeks, he's a baby after all. Can't wait to see pics.
all that glitters
* Don't freak out right away if pup has soft poos when it gets home, almost always happens with the excitement/new change * Don't give into their crying and whining if they whinge in their crate/room at night, it is inevitable * Let pup settle in for a day or so before people come over to oohh and ahh over it

corvus
I disagree with some of the stuff other people have said Because I'm difficult. I would say remember that she is just a baby and she is not capable of very much impulse control. Her mind is like a butterfly. Or a dragonfly, if she's that kind of puppy. She'll do whatever grabs her at the moment. Decide what you want your relationship built on and start building it. For me, that's trust. So nothing but love and good things for pup if I can possibly swing it that way. Puppies don't make mistakes: people do. Whining is inevitable, but you don't have to ignore it. If you spend some time reassuring your pup and waiting until they are calm before you leave them, then the whining will be minimal. They're just babies and they whine and cry because they are distressed. If you're okay with letting your pup be distressed, then ignore it, but I'm not, so I go and reassure them. It's all part of building the trust. The first week I had Kivi was dedicated to teaching him to handle being alone. He would howl and cry and I realised he was just frightened of being alone. I would stay with him until he fell asleep and then leave him. It didn't take long.
