Only thing mine have ever gotten caught in their throats was a half chewed rawhide treat, and even then they were able to get it back out themselves. They eat bones everyday but are OK with those so far.

I used to give my dogs chicken wings/necks until one of them started to try to swallow them whole and started to choke... Although me dogs chew their food, they have still choked. I mean, I chew my food and I have choked before. Anyway, I dont give my doglets and sort of chook bone now - only 'big dog bones' lol... they think they are very special having such big bones! haha...

Really depends on what you mean by choked.

I have never had a problem with bones, my current girl occasionally rips a big flap of meat off a bone and swallows it without chewing and then brings it back up, chews it and re-swallows it.

The pugs do this as well. Yes I supervise but with lamb ribs they always are able to use their natural gag reflex to bring back up an pieces that are to big. If they do this several times with the one piece I will take it off them.

I chop up chicken necks and don't feed chicken wings any more as my girl was as good as dead from having one of them caught in her throat. She had stopped breathing, tounge went blue and pupils were dilated. It took me at least 7 minutes of mouth to snout and performing the hymlic maneuver to dislodge the blockage and get her breathing by herself again. Very scary but yes I still feed bones but only certain sorts.

Mac once 'choked' on a salmon bone, in canned salmon. I don't know if they are cooked bones or not, but no longer feed salmon in cans!

They have every other bone under the sun.

All 4 of mine have had bones (all types, lamb, beef, chicken, Wings, necks etc) since they have been 8 weeks old and never has one of them chocked. I do not give them any bones if I am not home. If my oldest has a chicken frame about 6 hours later he vomits up the vetebrea (sp) all in perfectly formed little pieces  Not sure why but obviously he cant tolerate them, anyone else had this happen?

Usually the bones just crumble up in the tinned salmon. Was it definitely a bone, or might it have been a chunk that was a bit big to swallow easily?

The only thing I have ever had an issue with was rawhide chew, Misty swallows it in huge hunks.

He is no longer allowed to have them.

I like to feed bones but only the bigger ones, chicken necks make me very nervous as both dogs love to swallow this whole

I've only had one the issue with chicken necks -It was all okay until one day Hugo wanted to finish it so quick he swallow it whole. It wasn't nice when 4 days later at 3am he vomited up a whole chicken neck on my bed. No kidding!!

I can't know for sure, he went outside hacking and coughing and I followed him, but didn't actually see what it was.

I've had one dog get a raw bone stuck in her throat and another dog has had a stick wedged across his teeth a few times.

I don't allow my dogs to eat bones when I'm not here. If I am going out and there are unfinished bones they are put up until later.

The bone that got stuck was a lamb shank. I avoid them now as I get worried about them splintering too.

Never and I have fed bones daily to a number of dogs for many years now. But I've had to remove the occasional bit of bone stuck over teeth or wedged in the roof of the mouth. Fortunately all my dogs let me put my fingers in their mouths to remove these.

THIS POLL IS INVALID.

If you vote NO, you find your vote isn't counted unless you check a box in the next section saying what your dog has choked on.

that's why there is an option "N/A" in the 2nd box

so no, the poll is VALID

My dog has choked once on a chicken neck when he was a baby puppy.

It was only the second or third time I'd fed them and as he'd gulped down the previous small ones whole I decided to try him on a large neck to see if he would chew. Bad move, he swallowed it whole, gagged, I panicked and pulled it out of his throat. I've no idea if he would have got it out by himself, I didn't chance it.

After that I fed the necks broken up into small pieces until he finally learnt to chew them. He now had chicken frames/necks/wings on a daily basis with the occasional lamb flap or shank or pork bone. He also gets a large marrow bone to chew on once a week. No problems since

My old girl choked on a neck once - she was a gulper. I got it out of her throat and she was okay (gave me quite a scare though!). When the necks I buy are big thick ones I attack them with the meat cleaver to smash them up a bit so they are not a perfect shape to block the throat if they don't chew properly. Another of my girls was choking on a lamb flap once and got very distressed. She's always been one to chew well so that did surprise me. I always keep a close eye on them while they are eating. A dog I was looking after choked on a piece of Four Legs. I had promised the owner I wouldn't give her chicken necks cause she was worried about her choking and she went and choked on that instead! It really gave me an awful fright. Bad enough one of mine but this was someone else's dog. I noticed not long after that they were making the pieces smaller so maybe I was not the only one to have a problem.

My previous ridgeback Zoe got a raw lamb shank bone stuck on her teeth, got home one day & she was drooling everywhere, had to rush to the vets to get it off (I could not get it off stuck fast) :happydance2:
