Redness/slight Bleeding In Pup's Mouth

Recommended Posts

Our 13 wk old lab pup had a big yummy bone today which he spent almost 2 hours on in the backyard.

Tonight, his molars (I think they're molars, up top behind canines) are red and bled very slightly. Is this okay ?

He has an overbite of about 10mm.

He's not in any discomfort and played normally before hopping into his bed just now.

Chances are the pup has just chewed to hard and long on the bone - and it may have splintered slightly causing a few light scratches etc - keep an eye on him but i wouldn't be too worried.

What kind of bone was it? When my guys were that age i was mostly sticking to bones they could more or less eat the entirety of rather then say cow femurs etc.

Sounds normal  soft gums...especially at this age, as the baby teeth start to loosen slightly, may bleed after eating hard things.

great, thanks. He doesn't seem to have lost any baby teeth yet but I'm sure it'll start soon.

thanks persephone.

He ate it all (or best part of it, he keeps going to finish it off when he's outside) - it was a veal shank.

ETA: molars are red on both sides of his mouth

As Persephone said, the shank will be a bit hard for him at this point - he'll still go through the bone but it will be a bit rough/hard on him and his system. The necks, flaps, wings, etc type stuff will be a bit gentler on his teeth and tummy

thanks, I actually do not know what a flap or brisket is ?

I have bought off lamb off cuts before but they seem to have heaps of fat and also I got a bit panicky the other day because he was trying to swallow a big chunk whole and I was worried it might get stuck.

Oh well you live n learn. Poor little bugger was up three times during the night with the runs.

He is happy and not really in any discomfort but just has urgent appointments with the grass !

***Runs off to buy anything but shank for next time. **

could well have been the marrow out of the bone

maybe hava a look at your supermarket for bags of dog bones?

or ask your butcher? Ours have the boned beef ribs/lamb flaps..all sorts!

You can buy chicken frames/carcasses from the supermarket, or a chicken supplier.
