all that glitters
My mum has had a min pin pup for about a month now, when they first got her she was SO tiny! Now she is a lot more rubust and larger, but still small Anyway, we take Shyla over 2-3 times a week, and she gets on great with their Golden Retriever, but cos Shyla loves to play and playing involves 'mouthing' each other and all that, she can't be let loose with the min pin cos it's head is the size of her mouth! For those who have such a large/small dog scenario, when can the larger dog be allowed to play with the smaller one? When the min pin is adult size will it be ok? It's frustrating cos I have to keep Shyla on a leash the whole time, or min pin goes in her playpen and they mouth through the bars
Dogsfevr
Our large dogs only interact when there taught little dog manners. When they have learnt to play with them they must lay down or stay still then they happily interact, until then its no play. This also applies to the small dogs, they are taught not to stir or be silly It would take one rough play & it will snap the min pins legs
irl
Merlin plays with Tinkerbell, but he is watched really closely and pulled up pretty quickly if he looks like he is getting rough. Like settrlvr says, they need to be taught how to play with the little ones.
Dogsfevr
This is my GSD boy many years ago.I got him at 15 months with no exposure to small dogs, patience & training made him a great trusted companian. Another is our grey.We got her at 7 yrs supposedly a chook killer & in this photos pups are 8 weeks. Do it right & it will work but dont rush it Edited July 4, 2009 by settrlvr

all that glitters
Thanks! At the moment we keep her on leash and let the min pin come to her, we've had some good moments now where she just licks her, I mostly hold Shyla on my lap though and min pin goes crazy leaping around near us
Tambaqui
When I first saw the topic title, I kept thinking it must be about the GSD and the Min Pin that met at the obedience last Saturday lol! But my advice though is unless you can supervise them and also be able to tell your GSD or be able to stop them when it gets to rough, I wouldn't have them together to be honest. I own a GSP girl and my parents own a Min Pin (Just 3.5 Months now) and they get on alright, but when Bella used to play rough, we had to separate her and crate her or often tell her no, but we do the same for Clancy (The Min Pin) as he does play very rough as well and has a tendency to bite her or pushes her around. Clancy did his first obedience on Saturday and he had a GSD in the class (Roughly 3 months I think) and they were off lead together, but it was supervised and Clancy was able to hold his own and stand up to the GSD like he was when he is with Bella, so honestly it's all depends, if your mum's Min Pin does not want play any longer, then separate them . We also been advise to supervise them because I was told by someone smaller dog died during the night due to internal bleeding by being stepped on by the bigger dog. Hope that helps!
