Tilly Posted June 28, 2009 Share Posted June 28, 2009 Yesterday morning my 12/13 week old GSD pup was vaccinated. He was a little tired after I got him home but he was doing everything normal - I wasn't too concerned because I had been playing with him a bit that morning to wear him out so he would behave at the vets. Last night about 12:30am I heard his vomitting/regurgitating his dinner (which he had about 6pm). I took him outside and cleaned up his crate. He was running around fine outside, went to the toilet etc so after about 30 minutes I put him back to bed. About 20 minutes later he was vomitting again. Again I put him outside for a while I cleaned things up. About an hour or so later he was vomitting again. Later on he vomited again but is was liquid only (obviously nothing left in his stomach). I contacted his vet and he didn't seem concerned - basically saying some dogs have a bit of a reaction and that he will be fine. I tossed up about feeding him this morning but he was absolutely starving - so I gave him a couple of chicken wings. He has vomitted once more after breakfast. Should I be concerned? Staranais Posted June 28, 2009 Share Posted June 28, 2009 Poor baby - that does sound like a bad reaction. Which vaccine was it, just out of interest? I'd keep him hydrated (encourage him to drink), keep him warm, and feed him bland food. Sandra777 Posted June 28, 2009 Share Posted June 28, 2009 (edited) There's not at lot a vet could do for him if it is a vaccine reaction, so I wouldn't be stressing puppy out by taking him anywhere. Let him rest, feed him only very soft foods and not a lot for the next 24 hours. Make sure he drinks, even if that means adding milk (if not lactose intolerant) or unsalted stock to his water to get him interested. A little plain cooked chicken meat, a couple of scrambled eggs, perhaps a little low fat cooked lamb if you have some. He won't starve to death in 24 hours, even though he'll probably try to say he is!, but must have plenty of fluids. By the next time his vaccinations are "due" you will need to have made some decisions about what to do.... research research research! But if he continues to vomit is may not be a vaccine reaction, so do be careful :-) Hope he's better soon. If your in any doubt why not get the dog titre tested to see if the dog has anti bodies in it's system. If it has antibodies they will be there for life. Only death or irradiation will kill them. The vet that I used does one at 6 weeks and then one at 10 weeks, its supposedly some new thing where they dont do a 3rd vac, shame my poor baby got a bit chesty after the kennel cough vac that went up his nose. He had a big sleep during the day and then a little bit of food which he had kept down so far. all that glitters Posted June 28, 2009 Share Posted June 28, 2009 I hate the idea of vaccinations, Shyla got c3 in 2 doses, and I'm going to look into titre testing for the next coming years, I don't want to have to put that powerful stuff into her body if I don't have to. She got weepy runny eyes and was not herself after the 2nd vaccination too, who knows what cocktail is in that stuff! I hope your boy feels better soon! Does that mean breeders keep the pups for an extra 2 weeks after vaccination and the pups are not rehomed until they are 10 weeks old? Ace got his 3rd vac and his neck swelled up and he got KC. Was flat for a few days after the vaccination. Star got her 1st at 6 weeks, 2nd at 10 weeks now the vet said I have to wait until she is at least 16 weeks before her 3rd vac to ensure her previous 2 kick in.... But the vet was happy to give her a heart worm at 12 weeks. Keep fluids up on your pup, even if you have to put some sweetness in like a small amount of red cordial in the water to ensure the pups drinks. Maybe a bland diet like some rice and some cooked chicken breast mixed together. Nothing too strong for the pups belly. Tilly Posted June 29, 2009 Author Share Posted June 29, 2009 Well ... we had another bad night last night. He started vomiting again at about 2am and continued until about 6am. It wasn't continual vomiting but it was about 30 minutes to an hour apart. Thankfully I managed to catch him each time (after the first one) and rushed him outside - so I didn't need to do a complete bedding change. I can't understand why it is at night only. He only did one little vomit yesterday morning and then was fine for the rest of the day. He is off to the vet this afternoon and I have a friend watching him for the day. Tilly Posted June 29, 2009 Author Share Posted June 29, 2009 The little boy has been to the vet ... he has got a bit of a temperature and has lost about 0.7kg. The vet has given him an injection to stop the vomitting and some anti-biotics - they think it is a tummy bug rather then related to the needle. If there is no improvement in the next 24 hours then they will need to start running tests and maybe some scans to rule out an obstruction.
