MissLotus
Hello, Are CKC known for jumping a lot? I seem to have this problem where when I leave Annie in her pen area while I am out or at work, she has a habit of jumping out of her pen and into the rumpus room or in her brothers pen area. The pen is about 70cm high, she is now 4 months old. I have done everything from spying on her and saying "No" to using cardboard boxes to make it higher. She always seems to find a way out. She has been good for the last two weeks and today when I came home, I see her in the rumpus area, playing with the cords etc. I check to see where she has jumped out and I'd manage to get some more cardboard to block it, but I also so found a hole (guess she has figured out how to dig) in the backyard. She has food, water, towels and toys in her area. Is this a phase that will pass? I am a bit worried when we re-arrange the pen area so that both dogs are in the one area that she will still jump. When I am at home and I put her in her pen area, she doesn't jump, only seems to be when I am out. Is there anyway of stopping this behavior? WildatHeart
get a crate
MissLotus
get a crate She has a crate which we use at night for her to sleep in. She is still a puppy so there is no way I will put her in a crate for 8-9 hours a day straight. What I really want to know is if they will grow out of this behavior or is it once a jumper always a jumper?
persephone
she is obviously in a pen which is not high enough, or secure enough Once she has learnt that jumping/digging will get her rewards, well, yes, she will continue to do so unless the physical barriers are improved / If you intend for her to stay in a pen ...you will need to make it much more secure (and NOT by using cardboard boxes) The more she learns how to bypass temporary obstacles- the harder it will be for you to keep her contained
poodlefan
Buy a CCrate Securapen. You need something with a lid.
Tilly
Depending on the style/type of playpen maybe stack a second playpen on top to make it double the height .. secure with cable ties (do make sure it is secure and won't topple over).
Gretel
Is her 'brother' another Cavalier? If so why can't they be together? 8 or 9 hours is a very long time to leave a Cavalier puppy. And yes, since she can jump out she will continue too. They are not particularly known for jumping but some do.
WreckitWhippet
She's probably bored stupid confined in a puppy pen all day. Build a secure run outside, with an area to soak up some sunshine and a good covered area that offers plenty of shade and also a warm kennel. She'll be much happier
MissLotus
Her brother is 1.5 years old and is Maltese X. I do not feel comfortable leaving them along together for 8 hours when she is still small. She tends to be in his face which he doesn't like, so at the moment, they are supervise when they are together. Don't worry, they will eventually be in the pen together, however I plan to do this when I am on my next annual leave and can spy on them from afar so I know they are both safe. In her pen, she has access to the backyard with plenty of room to run around or even laze in the sun. In her pen area, she has a bedding and toys to play with. So I am not sure why she LOVES jumping out into the rumpus room, when there is no toy or no access to water or backyard. Yes I know that 8-9 hours is a long time to leave a puppy, but what can I do when one has to work a 9-5 job I guess my only solution is to make the pen higher and keep discouraging her from jumping...a lot of spying on the weekends for me Thanks for everyone's advice. persephone
keep discouraging her from jumping.. if you are away all day- there is no way you will be able to effectively train/discourage her. the pen needs to be higher and stronger.
Sandra777
Is it possible to cover the pen with a heavy-ish cloth (thinking heavy table cloth weight material) and peg it down with clothes pegs. Only problem is if you're not careful she may get an end of the cloth through the pen and have hours of fun playing tug of war.
persephone
peg it down with clothes pegs. at 4 mths old, she is capable, I'm sure, of ripping material, dislodging pegs, and chewing everything up ;) The pen needs to be such that she CANNOT ,EVER, find a way out. The more she learns to chew, move, undo barriers, the harder it will be to keep her contained..she will always be looking for a way out...as she has previously been rewarded for her hard work. pebbles
Either buy a crate with a solid attached top or make a top to go on the one you have. My guys dont attempt of jump out of their pens at shows but I'd never leave them without a solid closing lid on the pens. The pens from Bunnings are handy for making tops, just wire a section on to one side of your pen and close with dog clips. May have to cut to fit. Your's sort of has company but she can't play with or sleep with the other dog. Discouraging her from jumping is not going to work. Have you thought what would happen if she got her leg caught as she was jumping over? If you try to modify the pen to keep her in you risk her getting caught in something. Dogs have been strangled trying to get out of things. If she is going to be penned she needs a really secure pen with a lid.
MissLotus
I believe my pen is secure in away that if she does jump out, her leg cannot get caught on anything. I've placed weed mat along the pen, so her foot cannot get stuck between the bars. The large cardboard pieces are up against the pen and secured by heavy boxes. So if by chance they fall on top of her, it's won't hurt her. If she manages to jump out (as she has been), there are boxes for her to safely get down then from a straight jump. I am now in the process of finding a new pen with a removable lid. Can anyone recommend a good place/website? Once again, thanks for your advices. pebbles
Perhaps a pen with a door would be best. Sometimes "Deals Direst" or Ebay have them. If you 'google' dog supplies there will probably be a number of places online if that would be easier. A 'not-so-good' picture so you can get an idea. They come in various sizes. Pebbles, that pic is of a CCrates Securapen (previously recommend by me in this thread) They are available from dog show vans at major dog shows and direct from the manufacturer here

pebbles
I was advised ages ago never to lift a puppy out of a pen as this can sometimes start them jumping out. I've never really had that problem as all my pens have tops, wouldn't be game to leave them without - you never know when one's going to turn into a 'roo
