Leash Aggression

Recommended Posts

My 2 and a half year old Italian Greyhound has what i think is leash aggression.

Apparently it is common in the more timid breeds as they know they can't get away, so I guess it is a backed into a corner reaction.

Basically he is fine with other dogs. OFF LEAD. Not aggressive. Wouldn't harm a fly.

But on the leash when he sees another dogs he pulls, lunges and barks.

This is v. frustrating when walking.

Does anyone know anything about it?

Or some tips for working on it.

I will be getting in a proper trainer however not till next month I think.

At the moment i am reading "Feisty Fido: Help For the Leash Aggressive Dog" by Patricia McConnell and Karen London. It is only 60 pages long but is packed with very useful and practical advice and is easy and quick to read. Other great books are "Click to Calm" and "Control Unleashed". An assessment by a reputable canine behaviourist is a good idea and people on here can give you the names of some near you.

You will need a friend with a non reactive dog to help you. You start off walking him at a distance that he will show no interest in another dog. You get a little closer & distract him with food treats when he looks at the dog. Over a period of time you get closer & closer rewarding him for paying attention to you & not the other dog. If he starts to react you've moved too close too soon. It takes time & consistency to work.

Kynan - Is the book you are reading newish? Patricia McConnell also wrote " The other end of the leash" which I found really easy to understand and explained a lot.

I love Italian Grayhounds IggiePiggie.

Would the reaction of your dog on lead be similar to the behaviour of many small or timid dogs on lead? I have a small girl who can sometimes act in a similar way. When I read the book listed above it explained how it was more my relationship with the dogs and how our "pack" worked that created this sort of thing.

Apparently it was possible that if I allowed her too much /didn't set down rules she would feel she was the boss. And hence she felt she was in charge of me and had to be the protector.

Not saying you are like this as I don't know you or your dog. But I found it gave me something to think about.

Good luck. I would be interested to know what the professional tells you?

Feisty Fido was published in 2003 and Other End of the Leash in 2002 which i am now reading after being impressed with Feisty Fido. Have not got far so not sure if there is any doubling up of info but will let you know.

That could v possibly be it. But I am not quite sure how to correct it.

Will be getting someone in in the next week or so.

Will let you know how it goes.
