Entry Numbers

Recommended Posts

I have entered few trials and every single time, no fail, Im the last one in.

My surname starts with K, my dogs name starts with F.

I entered last minute, or when the journal was only available on line, makes no difference.

What does the placing in the ring depend on in obedience?

Or do you have to know the secretary and ask to be first?

Its a bit painful that I have to be there for vetting at 8 am and dont go in the ring untill about 11.30

How much you have pissed off the trial secretaries in the past or how much they hate you apparently  . Some I know do them in order of entries received for the lower classes - the higher classes are more complicated as people often have multiple entries to work around (although you might also have a person with a UD/Open dog and one trialling in Novice with a new dog).

I know on the weekend one of the rings was organised in ascending height order (it was an open class).

Im new to the whole trialing thing so I dont know any show secretaries (except the Dobe club one) so I guess my surname must piss them off.

I would understand that if I send my entry late then Im last, but for the upcoming trial (this weekend) I ahve send an entry before I went overseas in April.

I check the DOGS NSW website and see if the journal is out and I entered Id say in the first couple of days.

I am nr 23, last one. :)

Bella was always better the later she went in the ring, so maybe it could work in your favour fingers crossed

And on the bright side, at least there is only one chance of the dog next door moving in the stays if you are last in

Speaking from a Trial Secretary point of view I always sort out UD and Open first as they are the ones with the heights and when possible I like to keep them in height order, either I go low to high or high to low. Then I move onto the muliple entries and put them in where they are less likely to clash for handlers and then I slot everyone else in.

However as I run a double trial if your last in in the morning I try to make you first in in the morning.

Trial Secretaries wouldn't have any idea what position you where in at any other trial.

You say that its painful being there at 8am and not going into the ring until 11.30, what about the poor trial secretary and helpers that get there at 6/6:30 to set everything up and are still there way after everyone has left packing everything up and they quite often have their dog there trialling as well....

And personally shouldn't you be staying for presentations anyway??

Actually I think the novice people get it easy as they usually get through the dogs quickly, each dog taking roughly 5 minutes or so. Try being in UD where each dog takes at least 10-15 minutes and being towards the end. Most of the time you don't get on before lunch :) . Guess thats a luck of the draw.

I know how organisers feel, Im a comittee member of 3 clubs and help out with stuff too. If I fail I leave and dont stay for presentations.

I have never entered a double trial, once I have entered a show and trial on the same day and I was placed last in the trial and of course show and trial clashed.

I run full speed from the show ring to the obedience ring, it was a boiling hot day too.

I indicated on the entry forms that Im entered in the show and trial and spoke to the organisers about it in the morning. I would loved to be going in the obedience first that day, they decided to place me last.

Never again that Ill do a double again, Ive learned a lesson that day, thats bad showing and bad training.

Anyway.... so basically there is no "rule" as such in the lower classes as to how the entries are organised?

In the shows the dogs in the class are organised in the alphabetical order of the owners surname.

A show is different to an obedience trial. A show you put them in alphabetical order, obedience you put in height order for open and ud and dogs first bitches afterwards.

As I said I personally do the UD and Open classes first and then the multiple entries. I then slot people in around everything else. How other clubs do it I couldn't tell you.

If someone does put a note in I TRY to put them in first, put them in last, don't put them with this judge, put them with this judge. My last trial I ran I lost count of the notes put in with the entries. However if it is a valid one, eg "I have two passes with XX can you please put me in the other ring" or "just a note I'm handing this dog and this dog can you please put one first and one last" not a problem.

A double that I'm talking about is AM Obedience trial and PM obedience trial and that its why if you are last in in the morning I try to put you first in in the afternoon. I think that is only fair.

"If I fail I leave and dont stay for presentations."

I always stay from presentations no matter if I pass or fail I feel its good sportsman ship and you show that you are supporting everyone that got a pass.

From when I was a trial secretary I would usually sort by height for the UD and Open dogs followed by alphabetically on either owner or dog names depending on the mood I was in. I had a database and simple set in my sort parameters an then ran reports of the entries so it was all automated, I was lucky and never got any requests but if I did I would have edited the report slightly to try and work around requests. For double trials I usually reversed the order from the previous day.

At the moment with my trial dog I am ofen right at the start or the end when it's sorted on dog name as her prefix starts with B but if it's sorted by height or my surname I'm usually in the middle of the class as I star with L and she's around the 500mm mark so middle of the range.

It is good experience to have to wait  but you can always put a note in with your entry and most trail secretaries try to accommodate everyone.

IMO, waiting from 8am until 11.30 is nothing.

ETA to change yo to you.

waiting from 8am until 11.30 is nothing.

I dont know any people at trials so it does get a bit boring.

But in no time Pax we will be going to trials together and I can always be last then. :p

That's a perfect excuse to make friends!!! I used to be like that when I first started trialling again last year but I just wiggle my way under someone's gazebo or strike up a conversation with someone and I'm set!!
