Pup Only Pees A Little Bit - And Then Goes Inside...

I have a 10 week old Australian Shepherd pup, Banjo, who, when I take him out to go to the toilet he only does little wees, and doesn't ever seem to completely empty himself (even though he drinks a lot).

He was inside today and after I took him out and saw him do a wee, he proceded to wee inside twice, (1 after the other) - the 1st I only saw after the fact, the 2nd I caught him halfway, growled and threw him outside for a few minutes.

Any hints about how to get your pup to completely pee? I've never had this problem before...

Firstly, you need to be sure that the pup doesn't have a urinary infection which is causing this problem. It isn't that common but you still need to be aware that it could be a possibility.

Secondly, you need to restrict his access to areas you don't want soiled.

If they have unfettered access to all areas inside the house and you can't watch them all the time then they learn that it is OK to soil inside and they will continue to do so as you are sending mixed messages on where is OK to pee.

Having said that, some puppies do tend to do this kind of spot peeing more than others. It is probably that they are just not fully developed in receiving messages from the bladder, etc. and 10 weeks is still very young.

If you know he is like this then you may need to take him outside more frequently or walk around outside with him a bit more waiting for the extra pees.

Diet can also add to existing problems. Feeding dry food I have found tends to make this kind of problem worse - I have had better results feeding raw (BARF).

Thanks Stitch - He doesn't have the run of the house, and had the accidents right in front of me (1st one I wasn't watching but 2nd I caught). You might be onto something with the dry food - currently he's getting Hills, but I guess I might have to play around. I'll check into UTIs too..

He's excellent at going outside, he just doesn't completely do it! I realise 10 weeks is very young, but having not experienced anything like this when toilet training puppies (and I've trained about 4 or so), I'm at a bit of a loss!

(It's also been raining pretty much full time since I brought him home which I'm sure isn't helping - and he's only been home 2 nights)

I guess what I really want to know is how to encourage a complete pee... I've tried not praising him while he's going so I don't distract him out of it.

Would clicker training help?

Cooper was a shy urinater. We started taking Millie and Tiny out at the same time, say "Go Toilet" and my older two would pee and wait back at the front door. Cooper found it easier with the other dogs peeing too.

Sorry Bonnie - misread - my other dog goes on the lawn, and he goes when the other 2 do aswell, but like I said, it's only a little wee. I might put him out and hide around the corner to see if that helps, but usually he just goes and sits by the door if he thinks he's alone.

You mentioned he only goes inside on the tiles, did your breeder keep them indoors? It might be what he thinks is right?

I would contact your breeder and see if she can offer anything.

Thanks Bonnie - I had thought of that. As far as I could tell they weren't inside dogs, but had a shelter with grass and fenced run etc. I've sent off an email for suggestions... but welcome any more!
