giraffez
My pup has been doing well on toilet training outside however, the rain these couple of weeks have encouraged him to start peeing inside the house. Its wet outside and he doesn't want to go out to pee and poo. Its difficult as since we got him, its been pretty much raining everyday. On sunny days (which has only happened like 3 times), he is fine. Also, he won't go outside unless someone accompanies him. Sometimes he will go out and play himself but most of the time, he won't go more than 10 steps outside before rushing back in. How can we encourage him to do it on his own? Danois
Take him out on lead, take him to toilet place, use the cue words and praise. Do not let him play - its toilet time only. If he is not going out when its raining then go back to the basics and take him out at certain times.

Yep thats what we do, we take him out and praise...no muck around until he is done. But without our presence, he would only sit next to the door, he won't go to the grass area. By the way, i forgot to mention we created a tempoary doggy door for him until we figure how to make a solid one so he has an opening to go in and out as he pleases..... He should be using the doggy opening when he needs to go but most of the time we have to step outside before he will go out to do his business Edited June 19, 2009 by giraffez
becks
He's still getting the hang of things, just make sure you are there to give him the praise when he gets it right. Minis don't all like the rain, so try going outside with a big umbrella.

I take the umbrella out (massive one) and shelter him with it and he just looks at me as though he is shy that he won't do his business while i am looking hahahah I end up wet and he is dry! heheh He doesn't like the wet floor either. As soon as he sees a wet patch, he will sit there and won't move. Thats why I don't understand why he can jump into a muddy patch or likes digging up dirt after the rain

mrs tornsocks
push him out and close the door Yep ! This is what I literally just did for our boy. He comes to the door, looks out and decides, nah ... but when I gently pushed him out he begrudgingly went. HEAPS of praise.
Erny
Play in the rain with him (I don't mean when he needs the toilet, but at other times). Make "rain" his friend. He's new in this world and he might not understand what it is, so an exciting play (especially engaging prey drive) can make the difference between a dog simply preferring to be dry and a dog who absolutely hates the wet. This in turn, coupled with all the usual vigilent and consistence toilet training steps that we take, will have your dog feeling a bit less aversive to rain. When my boy was younger and only just at the brink of finally understanding that inside was not the preferred place to toilet, he absolutely balked at going to the toilet outside when it was raining (the drought had only just eased, so he really hadn't seen much in the way of rain before then). At that very moment, I insisted (by standing out and blocking his way in until he 'went') but after that, as a reward, I got his collar and lead and off we went to a local park where he had the absolutely best time running through the huge puddles; chasing the water birds who were also larking in the rain and water; etc. Must admit that I had the best time too as I had the whole park to myself and barely a care in the world. Since then, I won't say that a certain warm and dry dog races outside every time it rains, but he'll go out there if he needs to 'go' and doesn't fuss about/hate it as he did initially. And if you don't think much for getting wet yourself, imagine ..... back home; heater on; change of dry clothes (after towelling puppy off); slippers on; and some hot tomato soup and toast in front of the telly, with a conked out tired pup asleep on his mat at your feet and knowing that your day had been very productive in terms of training . Who could want for more? LOL Edited June 20, 2009 by Erny
Danois
That's what I did Erny. Boo hated going outside when it was raining - we did a couple of trips to the park in the rain and now he does not care! The first time we went - it was bucketing down and I was running around with him in the wet much to the amusement of people walking through with umbrellas! We're not long home from a very muddy, squishy, wet romp with some other dogs. Nice warm wash down and into his coat with a bone - happy as anything! persephone
Good point, Erny- I always take young pups out for a run/play when we have rain/thunderstorms... I love it..and so do they eventually
schnauzer
Minis hate the rain. My gang will hang on for ages until I tell them "outside". I bought my old boy a raincoat, as he takes ages sniffing around and gets very wet - much better with his coat on. Persevere and as Becks said take him out with the brolly and wait until he goes, then reward him.
Dogsfevr
Our minis rejoice when it rains & do the "im not coming back in till so wet it isnt funny" Even the minis we board love getting wet LOL Whilst its early days dont fully pander to your pup.winter hasnt set in fully so you really need to do more of the tough love now then stringing it along. AS already said stick to a routine & also shut the door.Your routine can also hit the stage where pup says great outside ,so are you . Your not outside okay this isnt the routine. With doggy doors, make sure he can see the other side.also if its dark & scary the dog will be unsure. We have heavy clear plastic on ours & the light is above. The dogs /puppies can always see the other side. If hes food crazy then feed his meals using the doggy door.Make the doggy door fun aswell

He just doesn't want to go very far to the grass area if there is no one with him. silly thing. Yep, i'll try locking him out for a while and see how that works. Trouble is, if we lock him, we not sure whether he actually goes to the toilet (we can't see the grass area from inside the house)
