Jaimee
I have an 8 1/2 month old great dane pup, who loves to chew on toys. I just need to know how to stop her munching away at them, as she lays down with one and chews away until it's destroyed, then moves on to the next one. Any ideas how to stop her? Hi Jaimee, tough job with the dane pup. it sounds like your dane is being spoilt and is taking advantage of you. I don't think she likes you enough to want to enjoy your gifts. She only lays down with one so that she can better concentrate on killing it because she is thinking of you. Perhaps she imagines each toy to be one of your limbs, she could be concentrating on your arm for example right now. I think you should just feed her your husky pup already and let her sleep inside when she likes. She might like you better for it. As for the toys, switch them for your personal belongings, because you don't love her enough for her to like you.

Nah Jaimee I have no idea what you should do about Keeley's obsession with destruction. Have you tried the rubber kongs and things? I know she killed that kong rope thingy with the ball, but how about heavy duty toys. The Ruff toys you and I were discussing earlier would be good i think. pricey but probably worth it. I know a few DOLers would vouch for their quality. If she likes ripping into things, let me know if you would consider kangaroo legs with meat and stuff still on it, Electra would be capable of tearing one up too, although a tail might be lighter for her. If you want, I can get some for you during the week sometime and you can pick them up after week. Oh, tottally offtopic, but if you wanted to play date Sunday; 3pm is best. =] Bon. Erny
I always worked to prevent, as much as I could, my boy from learning and then obsessing the delights of de-stuffing his toys. When the stitching gave, I'd sew it up. He'd still de-stuff if he got the chance, but now that he is 1 year old, he's not quite as obsessed about it (when he gets the chance) as he was when he was younger. My boy has two soft toys - "Flea" and "Shrek" and has had them since his puppy days. They are both going strong. Although Shrek is now armless and legless because Mandela loves to 'pick' at the rope they were made of until it is completely shredded. I think Flea must be special (a hand-me-down from Kal's days - bless her cotton socks - but then, she never really played with toys so Flea was fairly pristine when Mandela came along) as I've not needed to stitch him up to save from de-stuffing. There was only one toy I couldn't stop him from de-stuffing. It was a round ball made of pieces of that stuff that wet-suits are made from, with a rope handle extending from it. The material itself seemed to elicit a 'pick-it-apart' response. I gave up stitching it up, removed all the fluff it was filled with (well, picked it up from the carpet and threw it away ) and left him to it. He now has the rope. And he also has the outside cover. Both are separate pieces and he plays with them, but has ceased his previous intent to completely annihilate them.
sandgrubber
You might try switching to horse toys . . . eg, the Jolly Ball. No doubt he'll still chew up the handle, but the main ball withstands very hard use.

stormie
Jamie Orbit is the same. Up till he was about 9-10months old, he didn't really destroy his toys like he does now - he'd just squeak them until he killed the squeaker. But now, it's all about disemboweling his soft toys. Basically I've just resigned myself to the fact that that's what he enjoys doing with them. I figure I buy him toys to play with, and if playing for him is ripping the stuffing out, then so be it! I just limit the amount of stuffed toys I buy and don't spend much money on them. You could try toys like cuz's and kongs, but if she's anything like Porpee, they're not half as fun cause they can't be destroyed!!
CareyJ
Hi Jaimee, We have a 5 1/2 month old GSP who at the moment doesnt destroy toys....yet but a friend who has a golden retriever who does recommended Aussiedog toys to us - they are made for lions! or so the flyer says. They specialise in heavy duty toys for dogs, horses and even zoo animals. Their website is an interesting read and they are made in Australia. Another piece of advice we were given is make the association between the toy and you playing with the dog and the toy if that makes sense. Take the toys away when you are not there to play with them. We have only partly done that because I an fearful of Leila getting bored and trashing the place! She has a tuckerball filled with biscuits (very heavy duty) and only 1 or two other toys which have survived, then there are special ones which we pull out and play with her but not leave her on her own with. Kyra
We have a major destruction machine here (kyra ) the dogs don't have many toys anymore because they end up scattered all over the yard, they get bones instead.
