Elfin Posted June 14, 2009 Share Posted June 14, 2009 My very special heart-dog, Elfin, has been admitted at Southern Animal Emergency Centre after suddenly becoming unwell at KCC park today. She was fine this morning, ate her brekky, had a play with the other 2 dogs, but then at about 12.30, I noticed she wasn't "quite right" (I don't know what it was, she was just being weird), so we left the show immediately and came home. By the time we got home, she was obviously in pain; panting and had a very high heart-rate. I rushed her straight to SAEC (they are soooooo wonderful) and they did x-rays to check for GDV/bloat (she is a Deerhound). That was quickly ruled out, so they did blood tests. They apparently were "essentially normal" but that she was a bit dehydrated. They were concerned about the level of pain she was in (they think in her abdomen), so have admitted her for pain-relief and put her on a drip. She is only 4 years old and is as fit as a fiddle, so this is all very scary. She has terrible separation anxiety (so do I!), so that makes me all the more worried. These things can just happen so quickly and it is all the more disturbing when we don't know what it is so we don't know what or how to treat it. The only thing I could think of was the possibility of blockage in the intestinal tract. Best wishes for her speedy recovery. But I could hear a dog yelping in the background. They said it was Elfin, and that her pain-killer was wearing off. She just sounded so distressed, and I am now really upset, too. Elfin Posted June 15, 2009 Author Share Posted June 15, 2009 Thank you all soooo much for your thoughts The vets called around midnight and asked if we could come and collect her as she was so anxious. Her blood tests were ok (they gave her 2 bags of IV fluids so she was no longer dehydrated) and 2 painkillers. She was VERY drowsy and whining all night, and struggled to get off her bed to urinate. She is still very very quiet at the moment and is occasionally crying, which is scary because she NEVER cries. She is just lying on our bed wrapped in her blanky, fast asleep. I have fed her a small amount of steamed chicken, which she ate, but then staggered outside and scoffed a heap of grass. She has not vomited or a poo. She is making a strange motion when she swallows, like she has something in her throat. I mentioned it to the vet last night, but they didn't seem too concerned. The vet didn't seem to have an answer as to what was going on - but said it may have been a gastro brewing. Once again, thank you for your thoughts during our scary time. Erny Posted June 15, 2009 Share Posted June 15, 2009 (edited) Personally, given that you don't know what the problem is nor where it might lead, I wouldn't be satisfied with a "don't know" answer from the Vets. I'd be at either a specialist Vet or someone such as Dr. Bruce Syme in Castlemaine VIC who is expert in understanding the digestive systems of dogs. For a dog to be expressing so much discomfort, something (IMO) is definitely amiss. I'm not comfortable with the fact that you are reporting symptoms which are not her usual nature and they are shrugging it off. I still can't help thinking "blockage" of some sort. Maybe not even as low down in the gastric tract. Perhaps higher up and perhaps only partial, but enough to cause discomfort. Know that YOU know your dog better than anyone.
