voloclydes
well turns out the doggie we just got saturday (leo the dalmation) has a urinary problem. 1 he forgets to drink :D (today it snowed and he was licking the snow off the car) bucket of water in the workshop. 2 he seems therefore to have cloudey urine. (spots of blood at the end) vet has seen and prescribed meds. vet say's he thinks tis crystalline urine. he was getting home brand tin and biscuits at old home. now getting dog pro 4x 2 biscuits. very similar to the old fashioned dog biscuit(for those old enough to remember that was about the size of a slice of bread. these are half that. protein 12% all natural recommended for dog with diabetes and allergies
The Spotted Devil
Hi Clydes I have posted in the Dally thread already. There are several types of urinary stones - some common to all dogs and one type that is specific to Dals (and I think a few other breeds). Your vet needs to know what type of stones they are before treating. Have a really good read of the American Dally Club website that I posted - there is some leading research over there at the moment. As for drinking, some Dally owners add a dash of milk to encourage their Dals to drink - worth a shot!
voloclydes
he not suggesting stones, but that cause he seems not to be drinking the urine gets crystals which form like a blockage intermittently. looking for ways to make things happen better. vet suggested putting extra salt on his food like a pinch, to make him thirsty, but he just does not go looking for it, or seems to forget where to look. will look at the site. thanks for the reply. puggy_puggy
Get him onto a BARF, RAW or Prey Mode diet. Fresh food already has water in it so dogs do not need to drink as much. Many dogs are allergic to what is in dry food. His body probably needs to detox from the junk he has been fed for years. If you really want to feed him dry food then add water to it. stormie
I'm not 100% sure on this as I don't have a lot of dalmatian experience, but aren't diets that are high in certain meats, offal etc, not desirable for dallies because they are high in purine and thus increase the chances of crytals/stones forming? Staffyluv
Sounds like oxalate crystals - they can and do form into stones if left untreated... If you can get him to wee on a piece of paper, then let it dry in the sun, you will see that crystals form on the paper as the wee dries... Chances for stones in the kidneys or bladder are pretty high if his urine is already has the crystals... I have a stafford here that had the same problem - oxalate stones and you could see the crystals on the paper test..
