Can I Fly My Amstaff From L.a. To Sydney On Qantas?

I am sending my amstaff from Los Angeles to Sydney in a matter of weeks. I have just finished the ehrlich, brucc, leish, lepto panel. So within 30 days she will be on her way to Sydney. I just called Qantas cargo to ask a question regarding how many days out to make the reservation and they ask me what breed she is. I tell the lady that she is an American Staffordshire Terrier. She then says , " we dont fly pitbulls anymore" I tell her that she is not a pitbull and she says they are the same dog. I then asked her what the official Qantas statement says and she tells me pitbulls. Then I reply to her that all of my USDA and Veterinary importation paperwork already says and will say that she is an amstaff and that Qantas cannot refuse to transport her because the paperwork clearly says that she is an amstaff and it is stamped as such by the USDA. The lady goes silent and with attitude tells me," Well hopefully the workers at Qantas cargo dont give you a problem" Oh boy....more stuff for me to worry about now. I can just see the problem that is going to arise at Qantas cargo on the day of the flight. Being there are so many amstaffs and pitbulls in LA, I can see one of the cargo workers saying that there is a pitbull in the crate and we cant fly her. And I am going to get the call and have to go back and argue and debate the entire issue. Does anybody have any experience with this new ruling from Qantas? Do you think that I will have a problem? Or will my USDA stamped paperwork and import permits resolve any doubts with Qantas cargo? Any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you tell them its an Amstaff and its an Amstaff..... Its an Amstaff! They cannot legally dispute it!

Nor are they qualified to.

If you tell them its a Poodle and its an Amstaff.... Its a Poodle

If you tell them its a rabbit and its an Amstaff.... Its a Rabbit!

Threaten to personally sue not only Qantas but whoever refuses to allow the booking if its disputed.

You wont have any problems.

Ive flown pure Pits with Qantas, the baggage guys couldnt have given a stuff what the breed was.

Domestic is different. Pit bulls are a restricted breed and can't be imported, however once they are here, they can be flown domestically without an issue.

amstaffcali - I hope you can work it out. If your dog is AKC registered then you should be okay.

From everything I can find AKC registration does not mean anything to be able to inport a dog? why is that being trotted out? plenty of dogs that dont have any sort of registration are imported.

Amstaffcali get everything you can in writing. Best of luck I hope it all works out for you and your dog.

It isn't NEEDED to import, however if the dog is an Amstaff with papers and registered with the AKC then amstaffcali can prove to qantas that the dog IS an amstaff and not a pitbull and tell them to shove it.

Not on Qanats they wont.Qanats has not flown pitbulls for a couple of years domestically or otherwise. They stopped after American Airlines issued a statement sayin they would no longer fly pitbulls after an incident in which one got loose in the cargo and caused damage.Amstaffs are a different story.

Amstaffcali dont worry it wont be a problem. The people who load the cargo and as big a W****** as those in the office. It will be sweet. If your paperwork is right.

Hay I may be a little confused here. Surely the Flying Red Rat, as a commercial enterprise are entitled to make decisions about what cargo they will and wont process? If they make a business decision to for example "Not fly red and yellow cases" then that is up to them surely. In a world of competition and choice there are plenty of airlines out there that fly from the States to Aus so perhaps check with one of them. I know United are very flexible in this regard....

As far as I know, qantas do have a monopoly on airfreighting animals out of the country. Not sure about imports. In a world of competition and choice, there is not a lot of that around when it comes to airfreighting dogs in Australia.
