zayda_asher
The cafe does not charge me for sitting at the table, there is no hourly charge and their entire profit comes from the products they sell. Actually many cafes have a mark up on in house eating as compared to their take away prices... it helps to cover the cleaning costs etc. How are the charges not transparent? I have a recent vet bill and a recent mechanic bill and they're both broken down the same way to me? And- i can tell you which one was more expensive too!! Exactly! I am always offered an itemized account - no hidden costs at all... You go to the vet, you know you may well pay for medications, it's not that hard to factor into the budget. I've also paid non-PBS prices for meds for my dogs at the chemist and still walked out paying a small fortune... You know what though: my dog, my responsibility. They need those meds and so they have them... just like any other member of the family. IMO if you can't handle that responsibility then you shouldn't have the animal... The "average pet owner" also has no one to blame but themselves if they haven't taken the time to build a relationship with their vet. People need to take responsibility here... if you don't take the time to learn and do your own research and build a relationship with your vet then that's your deal and you wear the consequences of that... ignorance is no excuse. I will always be thankful for the great care provided by my GP Vet, our Specialist and the rest of their respective teams. They've always been helpful, always helped me work out the best treatment plan at the most cost effective way of doing so... Always understood when I have had to juggle things because we lost jobs etc. and always known that I will do my up most for my animals and ensure they have their needs met. That relationship didn't happen over night: it was built over time.

I would say most of them at Fair Trading has a vet they use. I don't think it would happen. But the minister of Fair Trading might look at it. WreckitWhippet
I just looked at an invoice from my vet. The last time one of mine was sick/injured he had a swollen face that came up over night on a Saturday night. My invoice includes a 7am Sunday morning after hours consult ( on my way to a show ) and the medication is itimised. $75 consult ( and he was left at the surgery until I came home that evening ) Bomox/betamox 150mg $14.75 10 x Antirobe $16.90 Dexamethasone 5mg $14.75 Total $121.40 I'm hardly going to complain they mark up their medications , when I get an invoice like that and another from April, with a Whippet that went down hill suddenly and wouldn't eat $44 consult ( which lasted well over half an hour ) Buscopan injection $14.75 Flunixil injection $14.75 Total $73.50 Now the vet could have charged me for the bloods that were taken , the phone call that night and the following day that she made to follow up and then again on the Sunday morning to make sure that everything was still OK. Much can be said for a good relationship with your vet

If you go to your mechanic and he charges you for labour and parts then you can get on the phone to a parts supplier and get the price. Who can you call to find out the cost of medications if you believe you have been charged too much?

If a complaint is made to Fair Trading about a specific vet then they will work with you to resolve it - they don't pick and choose because of personal situations. I would love to read the grounds for your complaint though...

You need detailed invoices for insurance claims anyway. My last one following a dog attack: Consult (std evening) $64.90 Medication Clavulox $53.60 (15 tabs) Clavulox Inj $29.80 (administered at my request and knowing price) Bandage $11.60 Dressing $.30 Professional fees Tissue Glue $49.95 (tube) Total - $210.15 Edited June 8, 2009 by Danois

Crisovar
I'm confused about what you feel is not tranparent ? would you prefer the itemised account you recieve at payment disclose the cost price of the drugs ??!! I don't see that on my hardware invoice or supermarket invoice !!I'm a vet nurse, and believe me - most small practices run a very tight ship in order to pay the suppliers, wages, and the other huge overheads in order to survive. NOTHING can replace a trusted vet relationship - it sometimes takes years to find and you should hang onto it gratefully. Vet meds are expensive - end of story, factor it into your petcare or don't have pets or as suggested take out pet health insurance. fifi You are banging your head against the proverbial wall here Fifi, they don't care if their Vet goes broke they will just move on to the next one. WreckitWhippet
More to the point, do people really care ? I'm not worried about what the medications cost the vet or what they mark up and pass onto me. It's the quality of the care , the service and the expertise that counts.
