It is the same vaccine but I want a certificate that I don't have to vaccinate for the next 3 years and my local vets don't want to provide it. I would like to see a vet that is willing to follow the new protocol and state that it's a 3 yearly vaccine (so I can use it for clubs/kennels etc). All my local vets follow the old protocol and only do yearly vaccines. It is true that the '3 year vaccine' is not different from the usual 1 year vaccine. Manufacturers have recently done clinical trials showing that most dogs remain immune for 3 years after the puppy shots, so manufacturers are now willing to issue a protocol that recommends vaccinating only every 3 years. They weren't willing to do that before the clincial trials since it would cost them big money if it turned out they were wrong. Vet may not be prepared to give you a certificate saying the dog is immune for 3 years unless you use a vaccine that states the manufacturer also recommends vaccinating only every 3 years, although your dog probably still will be immune for this long. Edited for sense & to add: Fort Dodge "Duramune" C3 and C4 are recommended for 3 yearly use in NZ, though the insert also states that the parainfluenza component may need to be given more frequently as a separate vaccine. He said 3 yr vaccine is not the same as yearly vaccine. 3 yearly vaccines were Nobivac and the Fortdodge Duramune $65 + consult = $106 Titre test $200 (incl consult) He didn't seem to like titre tests or think they were reliable, he doesn't recommend them. stormie Posted June 4, 2009 Share Posted June 4, 2009 I think that's because there is very little information out there from a scientific background that vets are going to trust. Our vets are out at educational talks atleast once a week, at the specialist centres, drug company talks etc etc, and in the 4 years I've been in this clinic, I've never seen one invitation to a talk about the new protocol (except Jean Dodds). I believe there was some information about it at the annual conference, but for those who can't afford to go to that, you miss out. The only information about the new protocol we've ever received was for the Jean Dodds talk, which my vet did go to. Our vaccines still have directions on them advising annual boosters, which really, we need to follow to cover ourselves. I think it's going to take some time before the new protocol start to catch on here. I know my boss is a bit wary of it all - he was practicing in the days before parvo vaccines, so remembers what it was like when parvo was everywhere. So I understand that he wants to see proof that titres and 3 year injections really are safe, before he starts recommending them to his clients.
