After viewing such beautiful pictures in this forum it all ways gets me wondering what different lenses people have. I only have the 17-85mm and 50mm but am looking at treating myself a canon 70-200 f4 IS lens in the next couple of weeks. I have a friend who works at a electrical store and he can get me the lens for $1600 with his staff discount $1600 :) cant wait!

If i recall correctly, you already take some pretty darn good photos Dieseldog (i think one of them might even be on the cover of a calendar i have on my wall? :) ). I don't know much about Canon lenses so can't help much there, though i've recently been using the Flickr discussion boards a lot to see people's results with particular lenses (in addition to the standard lens reviews), and see what their comments are, worth checking out (if you haven't already done so) before parting with your money.

Congrats on your new to be lens DD. I am sure you will enjoy it. :)

RD flickr is fantastic for looking at what lenses and cameras are capable of isn't it. I love that site and waste far too much time on it.

I dont have enough lenese yet. I want so many more.

so far I only have:

24-70 f/2.8 (I love this lens it is so a multi purpose lens)

50 f/1.4

85 f/1.4

Next will be a wide angle 14-24 f/2.8, but not for awhile.

Ooh hey Rocco which 50 1.4 do you have? I'm going to pick up the 1.4G tomorrow, but i'm actually still somewhat undecided on whether it's worth the estra few hundred over the D version.

And Dieseldog, to answer the original question in your OP, i have a Nikkor 17-55 2.8, Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro, and some el crappo lens kit number that came with the Nikon F55 that i got as my first camera. I'm getting the 50mm 1.4 tomorrow, and also looking to add the Tokina 11-16 2.8 in the very near future.

My favourite lens is the Canon 50mm f1.4.

Others in the kit:

Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye

Canon 17-40 f4 L

Canon 24mm f2.8

Canon 35mm f2 (there's a lovely story attached to this one)

Canon 24-85mm f3.5-5.6 USM...a very under-rated lens.

Canon 100mm f2 (2nd fave)

Canon 200mm f2.8 L

Husband has a Canon 70-200 f4L lens that I can use whenever I want to, but I don't particularly like it. Awesome result but I find it really hard to get a focus lock, and generally forget to use the zoom. I'm a bit of a prime freak so zooming is an alien concept to me.

I have the D. They brought out the G a few weeks after I bought mine. I think if I had known about the new AF-S 50 I would of bought that. But then the D is still fast sharp lens. I couldn't tell you sorry if it is worth the extra $$$, I am sure it is and if you have the money go the G. :)

bulk of my stuff a 70-300mm IS but black lens, then a 100-400L IS lens then the 25-85 mm lens for the yearlings and closer stuff. I also have an older 70-210mm lens that did the bulk of the racing stuff for a couple of years and before that was a 90-300mm but the 40D didnt like it and was sluggish with the auto focus in race finishes.

mine are listed under my siggy. I love the 50 and the 100 but I dont like the kit lenses, well I hardly ever use the 18-55 but the 75-300 cant really cope with the type of photos I want to take, although I've taken a few nice pics with it, I would like a better quality, faster lens some day that can cope with whippets at full speed heading straight for me.

I have:

Canon 70-200 F4L

Canon 100-400 L

Sigma 17-70

Canon 50 1.8

I never use the last one, I need to get a prime around that focal length though.

$1600 for the f4? That seems high to me?

I have a stupid number of lenses and it's hard to pick a favourite as it depends a lot on what I'm shooting.

One of my favourites that not many people seem to think about is my Sigma 30mm 1.4 - SWEET and excellently priced. I love this lens.

LOL I forgot it even came in a non-IS version :D I haven't priced the lens, just startled me as I wouldn't have expected it to be that high.

Hallelujah the Aussie dollar is climbing again if that is indicative of lens prices here!

My favourite is my 50mm 1.4

My husband's is the 70-200mm 2.8 L

we also have a few cheapie lenses that we like to use as they are quite hardy (like the 17-85mm, 28-135mm and a couple of others).

On our wish list is something around the 90mm mark with macro, a 10-22mm and possibly the 24-70 L series. However the 5D comes first. :D

I have the following

Nikon 18-55 AF-S DX f3.5-5.6G VR

Nikon 55-200 AF-S DX f4.5-5.6G VR

Tamron 28-105 SP AF f2.8 LD IF

I purchased the 2 Nikon lenses last May when I got my D80

I purchased the Tamron 2nd hand back in February... It is a fantasticly sharp lens, but the autofocus is very slow, I should have got the 28-70!

So, I am saving up for

Tamron 28-70 f2.8

Nikon AF-S 80-200 f2.8

Nikon 50mm f1.4 (Will be the last purchase)

Sigma 10-20mm (If I want to do more wide angle)

Which will mean I'll sell my 3 lenses above very very shortly... they are great lenses, but kit lenses were always purchased just to see if I get in to it... and boy have I!

FYI, there's a second-hand AF-D version of the 80-200 2.8, condition "excellent", going for $750: it's in Sydney but they do ship, in case you're interested.

Canon 70-200 f/4 L (but not the IS one, couldn't afford that) (but all broke now and in pieces at Canon Sydney waiting on the US warranty company to give me a cheque for a new one)

Sigma 17-70 - my general walkabout lens

Sigma 10-20 - used only now and then for landscapes

Canon 1.8 nifty fifty 50mm - hardly use these days.

Also have a Canon L 1.4 teleconverter which is useless when hand held on the 70-200 L as that lens has no IS and you wobble all about and get camera shake when it's affixed to it due to the added weight. I've just bought a tripod collar though for a monopod I have, I'll see if it makes a difference.

ETA: on my wish list as in "wish I could afford it now" is the Canon 300 L fixed focal length for wildlife photography.

Etaa: Can we add our geek accessories? I have a 0.6 Hitech ND soft grad filter as the Lee ones were too expensive out here; a 2 stop ND filter and a polariser and a crappy Cokin grad that gives purple skies you have to then try and correct in PS - if anyone wants it, I will mail it to them.

Also have a cable release but as I'm lazy and landscapes don't move, I am using the self timer more.
