Meaning Of "vale"

Can someone tell me the meaning of "Vale" I have never heard of it and neither have my parents....must be an old term?.....i see it alot on here though and in the dog mags etc

In Latin it was used day to day in exactly the same way 'farewell' is used in English. Goodbye and goodwishes in one word.

These days it is most often seen heading an obituary, goodbye and goodwishes in the next world sort of thing.
