SmoothieGirl Posted May 26, 2009 Share Posted May 26, 2009 Hi all I'm going to take my puppy to obedience when she is old enough, only 12 weeks now and at the moment I think the Altona Obed Dog Club is the nearest and has a pretty good rep. However I would like to hear from people that know of other clubs (near Spotswood) that they would recommend. I am just a bit concerned with the repetitious nature of some of the classes in the more community based clubs. Having a Collie, she picks things up incredibly quickly and I don't want to bore her stupid by drilling her ad nauseum. The added complication though is that she gets car sick very quickly, so anything more than about a 10 (maybe 15 at a push) drive is the extent of our boundary at the moment. Four Paws K9 Training Kelpie-i is a DOL member. So you can either contact her via her website/email, or PM her. I think the former would be the better though, as like all of us we're not always on DOL. Well ..... we probably shouldn't be, anyway . ETA: Oops! Just realised you have drive-time limitations due to puppy car-sickness. Ummmm .... a stop for a coffee along the way? She is loving it, so might be worth looking into. I'm not sure who takes the classes at Nth Melbourne, but know the trainer taking the classes at Hoppers Crossing (they also run classes there) and she is great. We are current member of Altona, but haven't been for months, mostly because I'm usually showing my boy, and I'd rather not confuse things too much at the moment....! However, my girl (who we want to do agility with) was getting really, really bored - and then would muck up! - so would stay in the same class getting more and more bored....there's a pattern here I think!! We were also hoping to trial, but Altona does nothing to encourage (or support) that with members.... Anyway, we're in Yarraville, so if anyone has any suggestions for somewhere that isn't a) too far and b) insanely expensive - I'd love to hear it! Hi IggiePiggie Bronte and I have just graduated tonight from our Puppy Preschool classes at the Hobsons Bay clinic, it was so much fun. I'm thinking of looking at Hairy Hounds for another 'filler' puppy socialisation class until she is ready to start more obedience type classes. The vet clinic recommended them as they have specific puppy classes. Its in Williamstown and do 5 class courses for pups 8 - 16 weeks. She's very dog and people friendly, but I don't have many friends with dogs, so I kind of need an organised activity to ensure she gets the socialisation. Me again I have PM'ed RachelleBuck about Werribee as I used to be a member there years ago and I did enjoy it. They encouraged trailing if you demonstrated an interest. I tried ginger tablets and rescue remedy, unfortunately they didn't make the slightest impact. She was still drooling and looking sickly about a minute into the car ride. I was at pizza hut(being bad...) one night and wandered in to ask some question and they were so lovely and I didn't have a vet in the area yet. So I pretty much booked my Italian Greyhound Borris in the next week for a check up, then told them to expect another IG in a months time to get him checked over. I'm going to give these tiny tablets a go and hopefully she'll only need them for a short while. Good luck Shel72. Hopefully she gets 'over it' fairly soon. Try also in between times to desensitise her to any negative feelings she could be developing to the car as a result of her feeling sick from it. Start with the car in your driveway, turned off. Make things a bit of a fun game and have both rear passenger doors open. If she's happy enough, graduate from one of the doors closed to the other one closed, but have the windows down. Very short moments staying in the car and building up in time depending on her comfort level. Your goal is to have her feel comfortable and relaxed enough to not begin feeling ill (which may not occur as the car is turned off and stationery). Not that signs of illness begin after the dog has started feeling ill, so that's why to keep things short in time. When this is all good and she's able to be in the car (if she's not already at that stage) for a few minutes or more without any signs of stress/discomfort, repeat the same but with the car running. Then have it where you go for the shortest car ride. Depending on the dog, this could be as short as to the end of your driveway and reverse up again. Stop the car. End of session. Again - your aim is to have her feeling comfortable throughout and ending the session before she begins to feel the onset of stress or feeling sick. Do this as many times in a day each day that you can. You might have already posted about your problems - I can't remember (and if you did, I can't remember whether I posted or whether this regime or similar was already advised to you). It's a bit of a vicious cycle really. Dog feels ill due to anxiety and/or motion sickness. Vomitting makes the dog feel awful/worse. Dog begins to anticipate feeling sick when in the car, so the anxiety levels from the anticipation that it's likely to be sick/feel ill, begin to rise sooner and sooner, even with some dogs before they've even got in the car. The rise in anxiety levels makes the dog feel sick sooner and sooner. And so on. And yes, this is where for some dogs the short term treatment of medication (be it natural or otherwise) can help to break that cycle. But the desensitisation method above can also help - some dogs' reactions might even be mild enough to not require the medication as well (not necessarily yours Shel). But then, if you've been researching, you probably already know this . All the best. And I hope you get to go to Four Paws without incident. Please feel free to ask any question or give me a call after 7pm at night on 9749-5279. We train on a Sat afternoon at Presidents Park in Werribee, we offer Agility at 11am or our Obedience Starts at 1:30. All our training is now motivational, food, toy, praise, anything like that.
