Canned Tuna

Recommended Posts

so I have read in many posts dogs can have sardines but can they have canned tuna in olive oil??

My little 11 week old Havanese pup goes nuts when I eat it for lunch would a little be okay for him? and if its safe is there a limit?

I also give him a chicken neck a day. I smash it with a cleaver and he eats it all with some royal canin junior. 1 a day - is that ok for his age?

Cheers

yes and yes, tuna has omega 3's so its very good, tuna in springwater is better for them tho

11 weeks old chicken necks are fine, do you really need to crush them up tho? its good for them to learn young how to chew there food like necks and wings ect, so when the get bigger they dont just swallow them

for the first week or so i fed the chicken necks with me holding one end and letting her chew the other, then after a week or so she knew what to do, this was at around 10 weeks old

I'd just feed what the breeder suggests at this age.

Can't imagine the tuna would hurt, but maybe see how s/he tolerates it.

"Moderation in all things"

Yup his breeder said she gave the litter chicken necks bashed up as theyre still tiny dogs. Just thought while I was checking on the tuna question I would check the frequency. The dry food is fine and we also have another food that his breeder was feeding that he gets too. Although it doesnt compare to chicken necks for him obviously  My old malt NEVER chewed and had bad teeth so we are keen to discourage bad habits so will be graduating his to full necks when hes able

thanks

Tuna is not a particularly oily fish (very low fat hence it often appears in human diets  ) but there would be no harm in feeding it if yoour pup likes it.

Sardines, salmon and mackeral are all oily fish and have a far higher content of Omega 3 fatty acids than tuna does. I feed a tin of sardines at least once a week as a treat. An extra special treat but not one I am recommending for your pup, is sardines in tomato sauce :o

I've heard that tuna being a deep sea fish should be fed in moderation to cats because of the mercury. So I stay clear of any cat foods with tuna & a lot of the dry foods have tuna. So I imagine the same caution with dogs.

I have also heard to be cautious of feeding chicken necks. I have given them to my dogs on occasion but when Sooty was a young pup she would swallow them whole. It used to worry me what happened to them but I've since learned that dogs have the appropriate acids in their stomachs to disolve raw bones. I would try your pup on raw chicken wings. Raw bones are my favoutite way to keep dog's teeth clean.

You should also separate raw bone meals & kibble meals by 10-12 hrs. The kibble takes longer to digest than the bones & will stagnate in the gut if the kibble is sitting ahead of it. So it's best to give bones at night with kibble in the morning or visa versa.

My breeder told me to give Tilba sardines in oil to Tilba to help with dry skin.
