Tilly Posted May 21, 2009 Share Posted May 21, 2009 Following on from the other thread about puppy pre-schools.... What are always something I forget about when socialising the new puppy .... When my new boy arrives in a few days .... some of the things he will be socialised to will include: - Loud noises (thunderstorms, loud cars, motorbikes, starters gun, Fireworks etc) - Stairs (open and solid) - Different types of floor surfaces - Cats - Birds - Other dogs - People and strangers - Noisy children (we have 2 primary schools nearby) - Kids on skateboards and bikes - Elderly people with walking sticks - Babies in Prams - Crying babies (more the noise then the actual baby - I only have a recording) - Riding in Cars - The Vet (having his ears cleaned, grooming and vet examinations) - Large Crowds of people Is there anything else I should also think about .... please add to the list. We did this a little bit but found with the amount of things our pup was trying to eat that our fingers where in his mouth taking things back out anyway (he likes rocks for some strange reason - sad thing was i use to laugh at my brother since his staffy liked rocks, now my own bc has the same likes .... sigh) hehe all the best with the new pup Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Sandra777 Posted May 21, 2009 Share Posted May 21, 2009 Not exactly socialisation, but squeezing (gently!) the feet, lips, muzzle, skin etc. Opening the mouth, looking in ears, pulling up/down the eyelids to examine membranes all that sort of "fiddling with the dog" stuff. I recommend my puppy buyers always make sure they can hold the fully awake puppy firmly in their lap or against their body without any struggling, biting or whinging - sort of a full-body hug. Also recommend they "interfere" with the puppy's food bowl - I know a lot of people disagree with this but especially in a house with children I think it's important for the dog to grow up knowing that having a person messing with their food bowl is meaningless. nickojoy Posted May 21, 2009 Share Posted May 21, 2009 Should be more like what sort of things does a puppy need to be exposed to, to ensure they are the best! We take ours to the kids park and let them climb over the childrens play equipment, they are different sizes and shapes. This is on lead and with no kids there. And of course the Mirrors, so they don't go silly when they see themselves. The toilet flushing is another one. Nails being clipped or filed.
