BlackLab
Hi I have a lab puppy 8 weeks old and have some chicken carcuses. do we need to put the carcus through a blender or can the dog have a carcus cut in half. Could not get necks. Thanks
Stitch
Depends on the pup but I would think that a whole carcass would be too big at that age, so smash it up. You can mince it if you want to feed it mixed with veges. but if you want the dog to chew, then feed it broken up into several pieces that it can gets its mouth around. FionaC
Well my GSP (so a large breed like a Lab) at 8 weeks was eating half a chicken carcass for dinner each night - not smashed up or ground up at all ... from 12 weeks old he was eating a whole one for dinner .... we were worried about him scoffing it down quickly so we just gave it to him frozen ... took longer to eat and when teething it was great as it numbed sore gums
Kyra
My dogs wouldn't go near a chicken carcass at 8 weeks old, we just gave them chicken necks, wings and drumsticks instead. I'd definitely smash them up if you want to feed them.
WreckitWhippet
The Stafford pups get stuck in from about 6 or so weeks and by 8 they are well on their way to consuming carcass, as are the Pointers. Carcass can be twisted in half, grab the front in one hand and the back in the other and they will come apart. Larger portions encourage chewing and not to swallow things whole. there's no need to mash a pups food.
puggy_puggy
Cut it in half and let the puppy enjoy. Remember that you shouldn't overfeed as this can cause bone and tendon developmental problems. If you are feeding a BARF diet then generally you feed 10% of a pups weight per day.
