noneybur
The instructors that come to Uralla are Robert and Jenny Cox. They train all levels of dogs and handlers. If you attend one of their clinics you need to have an open mind.

noneybur
StockDog Clinic at Uralla was a great success. Due to lack of sheep, last weekend 11 & 12 July 09 was the first stockdog workshop at Uralla since Easter 08. It was a huge success. Robert and Jenny Cox gave us there extensive wealth of knowledge yet again and there were quite a few milestones made. We had cold mornings that quickly warmed up to beautiful sunny days. We had an undercover ring and the paddock available to use. There was another undercover ring available but it wasn't used on the weekend. So we have fantastic facilities even when the weather does turn bad. The showground made available to us a room to sit in on Saturday night which made having pizza and drinks much more pleasurable and a lot warmer than sitting outside in the freezing cold. This was extremely handy as Jenny & Robert continued on with a discussion and question time on the days events until we all went to bed at about 9.30pm. We had a good mixture of new people and people who have been before. I think everyone went home with a smile on there faces. For people who havn't been to a Uralla Stockdog Clinic, we provided tea and coffee (you bring coffee cup) with everyone bringing something for morning tea. So you can imagine what is on offer for morning/afternoon tea both days. We would like to thank everyone who helped on the weekend with sheep handling, filling up the urn, bringing morning tea, and pulling down the yards on Sunday afternoon. It makes the weekend so much easier to run with everyone pitching in. It was also great to see 3 young people, in Blake, Bec, and Rebecca who participated in helping look after dogs or handling on the weekend. NEWS: The Uralla Showground is looking at building a sheep race so when this is available Robert and Jenny will be able to incorporate some yard dog training into a workshop for people wanting to learn. Robert and Jenny are working on a date (in a couple of months time) for the next workshop. I will let you all know when the next Uralla Stockdog Workshop will be on. I expect the next workshop will fill up pretty quick. Until then have fun. Jenny Lark & Phil Laughton 02 66534119

Dova
I've got a question, I saw a farm & utility trial advertised starting from encourage upwards, what do the dogs/ handlers do in these trials. Now I'm an absolute beginner in herding trials just got our PT so we've been to one trial, that's how new I am. I know you cast the dog, does the handler stand at a peg & work the dog or is it like herding where the handler walks & the dog brings the sheep behind. Please feel free to roll your eyes & shrug at my ignorance but if I don't ask I will never know, can't just go & watch because it's an 8hr drive each way & I don't know of any in SA, this one is being run by the working Koolie association. noneybur
A utility trial incorporates paddock work and yard work. A farm trial is sometimes run in conjunction with a yard dog trial to encourage non trial local people to have a go and involves work that is usually done on a farm. If you can ever get to a yard dog or 3 sheep dog trial they are great to watch and learn. You can meet some wonderful people who really know how to work stock and dogs. Its not only about dog handling skills but being able to read your stock. The sheep are donated by farmers and they are not quiet sheep like the ANKC demand for their trials. Sometimes the sheep can be real buggers but that adds to the skill of the handler and dog on the day.
Dova
Thanks noneybur, I'll grab a stock Journal & see if I can find some local trials.
piper
Thanks noneybur, I'll grab a stock Journal & see if I can find some local trials. Dova, Look up the South Australian Working Sheepdog Association, they should be able to help. I know there is a trial each year in Karoonda that does yard and utility as well as 3 sheep. Strathalbyn has a field trial which is MUCH longer casts than normal 3 sheep, a bit more like the ISDS stuff in terms of distance and it is interesting seeing how many dogs turn in short at about the length of a footbal field from their handler. Both of those trials are aorund March though. I remembre from going to Clare to show at their ag show that they have a yard trial held in conunction with it and that is normally September/October sometime. The other thing with the SAWSDA is they usually have training days every so often as well. SPeaking of which, will we see you at ours in a fortnight? JulesP
Careful going to these trials though as the sheepies aren't 'trained'. I know a few people that have had problems after going to these sort of trials with younger dogs. Doggies have got scared of the sheepies.
cry123
Dova, If you are interested in having a look at 3 Sheep trialling the Supreme, which is a National competition is being held in SA this year. It is held at the end of September. on the Asutalian SHeep DOg workers site it will have all the details. Some of the best triallers in Australia will be there.
