Melissa4
Hi All, I have an 11 month old pure male maltese who currently has red/swollen lips. They don't seem to be causing him any pain. His lips have little red/pink bumps over them (one is near his nose) and they kind of look like human dermatitis almost and it isn't weeping (yet) As it is not bothering him too much, I'm wondering if I should wait a few days before I take him to the vet, and also if anyone has any information on how I can treat this at home to see if it will get better on its own? I'd appreciate any information. Thanks in advance Mel
Tilly
It might be an allergic reaction ... has he been anywhere new recently or eaten anything different?
Melissa4
It might be an allergic reaction ... has he been anywhere new recently or eaten anything different? He did have some canned food - which he only ate a little bit of.... But he hasn't been anywhere new... Should I be worried?
puggy_puggy
It does sound like an allergic reaction. When did you first notice it? Any photos? It could be caused by anything from a plastic toy, plastic water/food dish, preservatives and colourings in treats & food, plants, cleaning agents used on the floor/bedding, insect sting or plant. Tilly
Should I be worried? I would worry but unless his breathing is not normal - it should be ok ... no need to panic (if it is an allergic reaction). If it doesn't improve or if he gets worse then definately see a vet.
goldens
I agree----it sounds like an allergic reaction to me.
Stitch
I have seen this kind of thing when animals eat out of plastic dishes. What does the dog eat out of?
Melissa4
Hi All, Pics are attached... He eats out of very hard plastic (almost like acrylic) But he has since he was 9 weeks old. Hope the pics help. This morning when he woke up (it wasnt really worse) but it was a little more moist. ???
Animal House
I would take him to the vets, it is probably annoying him. The vet can diagnose it properly. Most likely an allergic reaction to something (new carpet, grass or plant in the yard). White dogs seem to be more prone to allergies. Have you changed his food recently? I did try him on some pedigree can food (just to see if he would try something newish, I dont usually feed them canned) He only had a little bit, but it may have done something. A vet might be a great help i think... I'm a worry wart. As much as it doesn't seem to be annoying him, it's annoying me.

OSoSwift
Dogs like us need to be exposed to something before becoming allergic. They need to be sensitised to the product containing the allergen. So it is possible that it is something he has eaten or touched previously without reaction, he has now become sensitied to and therefore now become allergic to. Good luck and I hope he is better soon.

Stitch
Ditch the plastic dish and get a stainless steel one!! Plastic is notorious for causing allergic reactions even if the dog has been using the dish for a while. Stainless steel can be kept cleaner anyway! Stainless steel can be kept cleaner anyway! Will invest in one ASAP... I have just got back from the vet - anti-hystermine type things to take.... They've said if it doesnt get better, she will prescribe anti-biotics, then maybe a biopsy!!! He also has curled eye lids that she checked on while he was there - he needs an $800 operation to correct them to stop him from becoming blind as because he is 1 next month, they will not get better from here... it never seems to end does it. Tilly
Oh no - not good news on the eye lids. Our Rottie had to have an op on his eye lids and I am sure it didn't cost that much....

Did the vet say what the cause could be? Was it allergic reaction? With regards to the eyelids, you might want to let your breeder know. Haven't heard of it in Maltese before, I know it is common in Shar Pei breeds, can you remember if it was Entropian the vet mentioned? You might want to get a second opinion on the surgery, or PM Peibe on here, (actually I think she is now SharPei Rescue).
Animal House
Yes, the member on here is SharPeiRescue. There is a link to send them a message below if you need to, they have a lot of experience with rescue dogs requiring the eye operations that you mentioned. (Being a rescuer of Shar Pei). http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showuser=5038 Edited May 15, 2009 by Cazablanca
Stitch
Sorry to hear about the entropian but the good thing is that once the op is done, its fixed forever. Glad to hear your investing in a new stainless steel dish - you can always use a china bowl until you get one. China won't cause allergies. puggy_puggy
Hope his reaction gets better. Your photos are to small to see what it is. In realtion to his entropion (eyelids rolling in and elashes irritating his eyes) does he already have brown pigment (pigmenatry keratitis) occuring? I seriously would only do the surgery if this has started to occur. I have seen dogs diagnosed with entropion and have never developed PK so the operation was unnecessary.
