mita
May is fighting for her life and I will offer all my prayers for her tonight. That bad. Let's all think of May tonight and send her cyber wishes ..... and all the others out there in similar plights. I understand how May had to be pulled from the pound first, in order to get a vet examination of her condition. Until then, it wasn't clear just what her problems were. I can see why she was thought to be preggers, just going by sight. It's given her a chance to see if she can be treated....and to be in compassionate hands, if not. I remember how Cordelia used to give some sorely -gone dogs a chance, every now & again. They were great learning experiences to read about the nursing required. And holding breath whether a particular dog would make it or not. I believe this is now part of a subject called Shelter Medicine....the U of Q has included it in their vet course. I'll send something down to DABS (is that Chinaplate?) towards May's vet examination/care. Thinking of her tonight....& as Cynthia said, of others in a similar plight. Gentle hugs for May. _PL_
I understand how May had to be pulled from the pound first, in order to get a vet examination of her condition. True Mita. She at least has a chance and if she has to go to the bridge she will (i hope) have her rescuer by her side. A curse on the owners who left an ill dog for a kind stranger to feel responsible for. Muttaburra
Anyone who comes onto a public forum and sticks their hand out for money is accountable and if they don't want to be questioned they shouldn't ask for money in the first place.I think it is reasonable to ask in this case, as a living creature is involved, what would you have done if you didn't get donations to cover her vet costs, did you have a contingency plan in place to pay the vet if people didn't give money. My own opinion, it is risky for someone to pull a very sick dog and hope/assume others will pay for it. Emotion plays a role in rescue, but it is not enough to sustain it. Well, if donations fell short or were not offered, there are other ways to raise funds to pay the vet bill. There are even books written on fundraising Let's see........... Sausage sizzles Guessing competitions Garage Sales to name a few. Seems there was a committment made to the dog before the full condition was known about, it was decided to follow that committment through. Stefie
Thank you everyone for their kind words and encouragement!! I am truly humbled! I'd also like to extend my sincerest thanks on behalf of Merna, Norma and DABS!! Our May is indeed suffering a fair bit. Due to her heart failure fluid accumulates in her body and her lungs which makes it very difficult for her to breathe. On top of that the infected sores and wounds, the general stress from being in the pound etc. - she is not in good shape... I, the rescuers and the vet have not given up on her though! Tomorrow a specialist will come in and do an ultrasound of her heart to check the extend of the heart failure. Only if the result of that is very bad indeed will she be sent over the bridge. But I am still hoping. I can still see a little spark in her eyes in her photos! Should we just do general donations to DABS, Stefie, via their website? Donations can be made by either contacting me and I will send out bank details or you can send a cheque or money order made out to DABS straight to DABS, PO Box 73, Canterbury NSW 2193 Please note in your donation that it is intended for May the Rottie! And also please everyone who will be or already has donated send Merna (chinplate) a pm with the amount you have donated and your address so that she can send out receipts! Muttaburra - I like your idea of a sausage sizzle! Can my dogs come?? They like sausages! But then again so do I and if I bring them I won't be getting any!

But then again so do I and if I bring them I won't be getting any! DABS is holding a sausage sizzle at Bunnings at Ashfield shortly. I am waiting for Norma to confirm the date with me and then I will (with her approval) start a separate thread to give it some publicity. The date she has given me is a Sunday and they are usually held on a Saturday so I am not putting it in yet in order to not confuse . Stefie, whisper to May that George's sausages are yummy yummy yummy .... and I'm a vegetarian .

ellies mum
Someone has to say it, why did you pull a very ill dog from being PTS when you don't have the funds for vet care. Why not pull a healthy dog from the needle? I feel really bad for her but can't understand it. Simply because someone was thinking with their heart... After having committed to her rescue by phone and then finding her like that it's only a kind hearted human reaction to try to save her nevertheless. It's called compassion. And if some generous people are willing to donate to help her - a big huge Good Onya! Thank you to everyone who as offered assistance so far. you know what Stefie.....we would have done the same thing.....I and Bella Oz is sending a little something from us.... sometimes you see one that just has to be saved ...dummo why it just is... Please do the kind thing and let her go, look at her poor face, she is in pain and sounds like she hasn't got a good prognosis. It's about the dog remember, not the humans. She is suffering yes, from untreated medical conditions. Some heart failure can be treated and a good quality of life maintained, once she is given some diuretics and other treatment. The sores also should clear up once her condition improves should also heal. Also I would try some Manuka honey (anti bacterial and encourages granulation of the wounds)on those sores too, and give her some as well. Once she is being kept in a clean, dry warm place they might dry up a bit. There's no guarantees for this girl obviously, but someone has decided to give her a chance in the hope she will have some comfortable and enjoyable years, being loved and cared for. Also I have never heard any criticisms about not trying to help difficult cases, that's an interesting twist Jdavis, but you do see plenty of people flying in here to critisize people when they do try to help them. So I am sure novice rescuers can decide for themselves. Cynthia, don't forget to post about the sausage sizzle in general rescue and also Shel can put it up on Pet Rescue, although I think they need a bit of lead time. Are You Serious Jo
So I am sure novice rescuers can decide for themselves. I guess the concept of mentoring and learning from others with more experience is not for you. Poor dog, I hope she gets some relief soon.
k9angel
If you take all of the emotion out of rescue there would no longer be rescue. Some people think with their heads some with their hearts. May's best interest is at heart and we wish her all the best and in doing so will forward a donation, because we choose to! Well said. And to the person who owned this dog I would say "Every dog has its day" I believe in Karma. What goes around, comes around. ;) Edited May 12, 2009 by k9angel
Cordelia
That sore is a lick granuloma and has been there a long while.. nothing to do eith the pound.. it is often an obssessive behaviour can develop for various reasons.. from boredom to dealing with chronic pain (in other parts of the body). Looking at that belly.. perhaps someone with experience in the veterinary/medical field should have been asked to have a look at her.... had I known she was being discussed here, I would have offered my opinion when I first saw her at the pound... that she wasn't pregnant and that heart disease was quite likely due to her severe fluid retention. She is a very sick dog and should never have been released to rescue (or anyone else). Mita.. you mentioned me in one fo your posts and i appreciate that you remember some of the harder cases i took on over the years... but with respect.. I would never have forced this poor, gravely ill dog to endure tests nor would I have prevented her from being released from her pain and suffering (even if it is at the pound). Where is the ability to look at the future for this poor dog? A large breed with (what is likely to be) congestive heart failure... not too many homes lining up for dogs with terminal illnesses or illnesses that aren't cheap to keep at bay (and then only for a relatively short time). My words were Also I have never heard any criticisms about not trying to help difficult cases and plenty of criticisms against. Conflating it to to the meaning of - not supporting newcomers being mentored and learning from others with more experience is just plain twisted and infantile. And for the record I have made many postings here to newcomers wanting to help rescue, to contact established groups about the support they need. Kaz
Whether or not she should have been rescued is now a moot point. So she is being seen by a specialist? I would now be relying on their prognosis and making a decision on her future based on that. Particularly as I have no experience with heart disease in dogs. If she has a reasonable chance at quality of life without a prohibitive bill in ongoing medication I would do what is necessary to get her well and keep her myself if no home could be found. Otherwise it would be best to let her go now and be satisfied with the fact that you provided a loving hand in her last hours. The vet should be able to guide you in this decision ;)
Stefie
Well said, Kaz. That's exactly the plan!
Are You Serious Jo
Also I have never heard any criticisms about not trying to help difficult cases I won't criticise anyone who recognises a dog is a difficult case and they are taking on too much, or that the poor dog is better off PTS. May is hardly what you call a difficult case, she is extremely ill and suffering quite a bit now.
The Funny Farm
Stefie, I have a dog very much the same with me. Vets have been treating fluid build up from a bad heart but now their thinking a tumour on the spleen or liver. Hope May makes it through the night. We all have our fingers crossed ;)
