Gretel Posted May 12, 2009 Share Posted May 12, 2009 A rellie has just told me her dogs got into the bin yesterday and have eaten a chicken carcass (cooked remains), some cooked rib bones and one and a half corn cobs. They were fresh corn not frozen (not sure if that makes any difference). All are small dogs. She is watching them closely and is about to give them parafin oil. I know corn cobs are a particular concern. She is checking poos and wanted to know will she be able to see the cobs if they pass them? Any advice gratefully received! persephone Posted May 12, 2009 Share Posted May 12, 2009 Being small dogs- they probably chewed everything -so she may not have a problem. The thing with larger dogs is they swallow the cobs pretty much intact- and they can then block the stomach opening, or intestine She would be best advised to ask the vet about giving paraffin. I was told to use psyllium husks.. it forms a gel which is non irritant, and 'cushions' sharp bone bits, etc... Hamlet(nearly 20 kg) has a half teaspoon, moistened,and in wet food.Make sure the little dogs drink lots Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

stormie Posted May 12, 2009 Share Posted May 12, 2009 We took a corn cob out of a JRT on saturday night! In this particular case, the cob never passed out of the stomach. The dog vomited a couple of times at the end of the week, but was still his normal self and passing faeces. Wasn't until sat morning that he went really flat and was vomiting much more. Do you know when he ate it Stormie? The dog ate the corn cob on the 3/5 (as far as the owners know) and didn't come in to clinic until the 8/5.
