I use Heatrguard every two months (my vet says it doesn't have to be monthly). Much cheaper than the annual vaccination. I purchase online . .. shop around cause the expensive places are 2X more expensive than the cheap ones. The dogs think it's a treat. I have never heard that it's ineffective. I haven't found anything cheaper and better.
Crisovar
There is only one drug that is used in the daily HW prevention tabs and that is Diethyl Carbamazine Citrate or (DEC), so it really does not matter what brand you use the big decision is do you want to dose daily or wopuld prefer to go monthly? There is a much wider range of monthly preventatives, so you really need to read up on those or talk to your Vet about the different products. puggy_puggy
Did your vet give you any brochures or literature on Heartworm and Intestinal worms? Heartworming products can be given once daily, once a month or in a yearly vacciantion (I do not like the vacciantion option) Heartworm Intestinal worming products should be given every three months. Intestinal Worms I would be discussing your options with your vet and as you are a novice purchasing your chosen product/s from them for the first time. After you fully understand what Heartworm & Intestinal worms are and what dosage and how often your dog needs treatment you might purchase the products online. then i read in another thread about the wollies/coles brands beign just as good, if thats true i have no problem using them. Supermarkets can not sell Heartworm products. What was being discussed in the other thread was intestinal worming products.

Heartworming products can be given once daily, once a month or in a yearly vacciantion (I do not like the vacciantion option) Heartworm Intestinal worming products should be given every three months. Intestinal Worms Sorry novice dog owner crawling in here to ask probably a really stupid question.....I recently took my (recently aquired) 7 year old Labrador to the vets to get an initial checkup and to get wormed. The vet wormed her for me and told me to come back in 3 months to get her wormed next. I'm now guessing that what she was given won't cover her for heartworm?? I did explain that I have no idea and would like her wormed for everything but maybe he has just wormed her for the basics?? If so what do I need to get?? Also the 3 month worming will cost about $80, is it cheaper to DIY at home?? Any help would be appreciated and sorry for crashing in one your thread APBT Jodi

If you are wanting to include heart worming every month then one of the heart worm plus worming and flea treatments can be purchased over the counter at the vets. Any help would be appreciated and sorry for crashing in one your thread APBT Jodi The vet would have only intestinally wormed her if it's only every 3 months. Can you check your vet invoice and see what the wormer and service provided is listed as? Even give the vet a ring. A lot of vets offer their clients the choice of bringing their dogs in to be intestinally wormed because some owners have trouble giving their dogs tablets so the vet, who is usally pretty skilled at showing tablets down animals throats, will do this for them. $80 for just intestinal worming at your vets. Did they give you a product to take home for this $80 or was the $80 for being seen every 3 months and the vet administering a tablet? You need a product that does Heartworm and a product that does all of the Intestinal worms (hookworm, roundworm, tapeworm & whipworm). Sentinal Spectrum is a product that you give monthly and covers Heartworm and all Intestinal worms. Other Heartworm products such as Revolution are given monthly and covers Heartworm but only two types of intestinal worms. If you use a product like this you would need to give an intestinal worming product like Cannex or Drontal every 3 months.

poodlefan
I would not use any combination of products where parasites treated overlap. You can get monthly Heartworm only treatments (eg. Proheart) and 3 monthly intestinal worm only treatments (eg. Propantal, Drontal)

Elfin
My vet is a bit of a hippie - that's why I go there! She is a huge supporter of minimal vaccination (only 2 C3's for our pup, then titre testing at 15 months), and also minimal worming/heartworming treatments, and raw feeding. We are in suburban Melbourne, supposedly a "low risk" heartworm area. Our vet said it was only necessary to heartworm 2-3 times a year, as Heartguard has a 6 month "reach-back". I used to heartworm every 2 months, but am considering every 4 months. Does anyone else do this?
Erny
i dont mind doing it daily, but il have alook around for produts with that ingreident, thanks for your help Apparently "selamectin" for parasite prevention/control, is a potent drug with no effective antedote. When I made my enquiries it was recommended to me that if you're in a heart worm area and once the mosquitoes come out, to use either plain daily Dimmitrol [available over internet] or plain monthly Heartgard or Interceptor given every 45 days -- not every 30 days. Published studies from France have shown that these products fully protect against exposures in the prior 45 days. The only potential problem with this schedule is writing down when the next dose is due -- start at beginning of one month and repeat half way into the next month etc. I would NEVER permit the injectable heartworm preventative. And like Poodlefan, I would not treat the animal with an overlap of drugs. IE Intestinal worm medication plus heartworm. Do them at different times. Rappie
We are in suburban Melbourne, supposedly a "low risk" heartworm area. Our vet said it was only necessary to heartworm 2-3 times a year, as Heartguard has a 6 month "reach-back". I would be hesitant to recommend that. Some product have a '3 month reachback' but this is more a reflection of the fact that they kill larval stages of the worms and not adults. Given that the time for development of microfilariae into adult worms is 2-3 months, it seems odd to recommend a treatment interval longer than the life cycle. This leaves you at risk of developing adult worms in the heart... I would recommend following the standard treatment intervals - however which product you choose is entirely up to you and what suits you best. Daily DEC is effective but it MUST be given EVERY day - if you can't do this each and every day then it is not the treatment for you. Missing one day of treatment potentially leaves your dog at risk. oakway
There's no way you would get me to go back and use that daily stuff. It contains a poison that you give daily. I would rather use one dose monthly. I also feel sorry for the Collie breeds that have to have the daily.
