Silly Fears

hello everyone

this might sound a bit silly, but my OH is worrying about this and i wanted to reassure him

we have a 12 week old bull terrier x boxer called Harlo, who we feel is bored in the laundry whilst were at work (9-3pm)

i suggested to my OH that we put her outside in the dog run we got her, but hes worried that harlo will get upset as she is outside in the dog run whilst our other dog Lily(blue heelerx ridgeback) is running around the yard freely, hes worried that Harlo will start to hate lily because she gets to run around free in the backyard and she is in her dog run, and says that if shes in the laundry at least she doesnt know that haha?

has anyone else had a puppy in the dog run and the other dog in the backyard?

sorry this is quite silly but this is our first puppy and we are total stress-heads!

thanks in advance!

I do not believe the pup will hate the dog for being free, dog's just don't have those kind of thought processes.

You could have a problem of the pup barking to play with the dog but I've found usually a single "free" dog will usually just hang at the fence of the penned dog all day. Give it a go and ask the neighbours to let you know if they hear any noise.

Kelpie_Pup- haha yes i know, you are right they are irrational fears! we dont want to leave the 2 dogs together yet because of the size difference, if the pup accidently gets hurt

molasseslass- yes i didnt think they had that thought process either my OH just worries to much! yes we should just give it a go and possible do it at night time and supervise!

Just give it a go! try it during the day-so you can see what they're doing, and hover at the window to watch what happens  Spying on little puppies is so funny.

Your bigger is very unlikely to hurt your pup-the only instance I imagine something might happen is if the puppy pushes the boundaries-and even then it would probably only be a nip or a growl.

When Halle was 13 weeks old, we took her to visit my partner's dad. They have a 5 year old kelpie.. we were quite concerned about leaving them outside together.. and yep, our little Halle did push the boundaries and annoy the cr@p out of their dog.. but when she did, their dog would either growl at halle or give her a quick "warning" nip.. nothing serious happened and that's how they work out the order in the pack.. as long as you and your OH remain at he top

I don't have a dog pen. When Tilba was little I left her in the crate while I went out shopping. But it was only for a couple of hours at the most. When she was bigger & getting on better with Sooty she was left in the back yard with Sooty.

I would keep them separated for a bit longer myself - only because I would be concerned the pup could be hurt by accident during play. I certainly don't think a pup would learn to "hate" an older dog just because it has free range of the yard, though  Dogs don't think that way.

Ditto - I wouldn't leave a 12 week old pup unsupervised with adult dogs all day, for both their sakes.

Your pup wont know that Lily has more space than him, and it will be good for him to get used to the sights and sounds of outside.

One note of caution, read up on K9's puppy development phases to identify if Harlo is going through a fear phase. When he is, you might want to keep him inside, so that something out of your control (like a meter reader entering the yard) doesnt freak him out and affect his adult behaviour.
