Eosinophillic Gastroenteritis Anyone Know About This?

Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows about eosinophillic gastroenteritis? I am thinking of adopting a Rottie who had this when she was younger and is now on Hills ZD diet. What exactly is this and is it a long standing problem. It says she has recovered and is fit and healthy but cos I dont know anything about this I am a bit weary. We lost our German Shepard last year and want to get another mate for my rottie x boy. I dont thinkI could handle losing another dog since so want to make sure its not a long term problem or life threatening if it reoccurs. Also if one dog doesnt eat meat is it hard to keep one who does? My boy loves his bones and I just wondered if its possible to have a vege dog and a meat eater?

Thanks in advance!!

Having worked for a paediatric gastroenterologist i can give you some info from a human prospective. Generally people who have atopic tendencies have this problem i.e allergies, food intolerances, eczema or asthma. Usual treatment is with corticosteroids and once it has settled it is usually ok but there can be relapses. I assume the dog would have had the initial treatment and is now on a special diet. Usual symptoms can be things like weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting etc. I don't think it would be life threatening (only if left untreated and the dog wasn't eating of course). I would assume that once he is well occasional bones would be okay and perhaps chicken (low allergy type foods). It is not caused by allergy in all cases.

Maybe you could ring the University or there could be a Vet specialist in gastro problems that you could make an enquiry with. Sydney Uni are always very helpful with questions like that.
