GeckoTree
I am putting together a new first aid kit and looking for some dog friendly pain killers to go in it. I have read that buffered asprin is OK, and have used this for my dog in the past, but panadine or neurofen is not good? does anyone know any emergency type pain meds that can go into a first aid dog kit, apart from buffered asprin? Or is asprin really not good for emergency and so I should scrap it? If theres any vets or nurses that can shed some knowledge on this, it would be greatly appreciated. Rappie
Although aspirin can be used in some veterinary patients it's generally my last choice of pain relief. In a true emergency requiring pain relief, the oral route is least likely to be effective and there may be medical conditions that preclude that route of administration. In any condition involving shock, toxins, dehydration, gastrointestinal disease and bleeding then I would not choose a NSAID such as aspirin. I would include things to assist safe transport of a dog to a veterinarian, such as towels or muzzles or leads. If it is a situation that requires pain relief, the rest of the dog would need to be assessed too.
sandgrubber
I'd suggest asking your vet. Mine recommends Rimdyl . . . a NSAI meant for dogs. She says the injections work faster, but the tabs are still good. But it is better to go through a vet on this one, as some dogs don't do well with Rimdyl.
