Where To Buy Wooden Dumbells?

Recommended Posts

My obedience club no longer sells wooden dumbells, only the plastic ones, which do not seem as attractive to dogs!

Is there a supplier of wooden dumbells out there? Yes, I know they are relatively easy to make, but several members have been asking for them, but no-one can be persuaded to make them for us

Thought you guys would be sure to know of something

http://www.obedienceproducts.com/index.html sells different sizes, though the wood is pretty soft. A big chunk of mine broke off the bell bit quite easily not too long after I bought it, the dog wasn't even using it at the time  Not sure how it happened, I certainly don't treat my things badly. But it might have been a one off

I'd email the suppliers and ask them about it, RS.

And I beat you :p tehehe

They are very soft.

When I bought my first one, Barkly stole it off my desk.

I came home to find the lounge room littered with pine chips.

..

Just yesterday I placed an order for a couple of new dumbbells and some scent discrimination stuff!

Yup I have one from them too... I haven't had any problems with it breaking - I throw it around the lounge room which has tiled floors and no issues so far! It is very soft though...

I trained my older girl with a wooden DB until we were on a trialling holiday in WA and I threw the DB and it nearly landed back at my feet. Now I have switched to a plastic DB  , just in case its windy and I am ever trialling in WA again.

Nah, I didn't wanna cause a fuss. Instead, I just ordered a plastic one from elsewhere which we're using. I use the wooden on occasion just to keep Ruby used to both textures, but I prefer the plastic cos it's Lab-proof

I've seen some wooden dumbells that are made of a much harder wood, if I can find a place that sells these and they are a decent price, I wouldn't mind trying wood again. But I wouldn't get a soft wood one again! If you've got a mouther, it shows pretty easy with the soft wood ones

Try approaching a staircase maker, or someone else that turns wood for a living. At least then you could order them to suit your individual dogs.

If you are going to trial, then you should be teaching them to pick up all types of materials. If your dog is not very interested in the texture, then its probably more of a motivational problem. Up the ante!

Yep in scent discrimination they have to pick up leather, wood and metal articles. There's also directed retrieving where they use cotton gloves. In UDX they have to pick up rolled banded face washers. If you think that's alot of different things then you should see the wierd stuff they make them retrieve in the UK!

I have a wooden dumbbell from Morrison and it is soft but for me that was a selling point, it's been made for her so it's the right size. The plastic one was far too hard for her and the bells were so big that they obscured her vision. Not what you want. It's horses for courses though, some dogs do better with plastic and some with wood and some need a hard wood dumbbell.

Jedi refused the plastic dumbbells when we started so I got the wood, but now that he knows the retrieve he will take anything into his mouth including plastic dumbbells and random objects. Phew!
