Melissa4
Hi Guys, I have just noticed that 11 month old male Shihtzu has a bit of a smelly bum.... Ralphy does not have a swollen bum, but when I tried to give it a wash (thought it may be some poo) it hurt him a tiny bit, but it's not stopping him from doing anything, and doesn't seem to be bothering him otherwise. The smell did not go away when I cleaned it - and now its smelling a little bit like infection. Any ideas on what it could be - I do plan on calling the vet tomorrow - But I am a worrying doggy parent and would like to know experiences now while I wait until tomorrow. Thanks in advance, Mel

Her Majesty Dogmad
Please get your dog straight to the vet! I have (unfortunately) a lot of experience with anal glands. My first was our first dog, I thought his bottom looked a bit swollen and was told I was imagining things by the rest of the family. There were no other signs at all. A couple of days later I was walking him and suddenly there was an explosion of pus/blood etc, it was awful. I rescue dogs and almost all of them seem to need their bottoms fixing!! There is a lot of ignorance out there and even amongst some vets, they just kept giving someone I met worm tablets and then more worm tablets. I told them straight away that it was infected anal glands but they didn't beleive me because I'm not a vet ... Anyhow, the dog got a very sore bottom and went to a different vet and had the glands done and then antibiotics for a week. Some dogs just need it done regularly, others occasionally and some never. There can be a smell which is quite revolting, a lot of licking sometimes and/or bottom scraping. Anyhow, if it doesn't look right, get the vet to squeeze the glands and problem is fixed. It is only about $20 - I have a couple of dogs that get it done very regularly. You can learn to do it yourself but I'd rather pay!
puggy_puggy
Does it smell fishy? This is a normal smell when the anal glands express themselves. Get your vet to have a look and consider changing his diet if you don't feed bones and fiber.

OhMarley
get the vet to show you how to do it first if you do it incorretly you can damage or even burst the glands.
poochmad
Thanks =)Turns out it might just be anal gland smell....got to work out how to express them outselves. If your dog has an infection he will need to go on antibiotics. Also, if you don't take him to the vet and it gets worse, you could end up with a ruptured anal gland which is incredibly painful and will require surgery! Also, if your dog does have an infection now, that will also be causing him pain. Our dog has consitent problems with his anal glands and needs a special diet as well as having them released weekly.
