laffi
What item is usually thrown (is it a bumper)? Do you bring your own item/bumper? Where can you get bumpers in Australia?
The Spotted Devil
Whoo hoo! Another retrieving addict in the making In my limited experience, bumpers are certainly used for training purposes but real (recently deceased) birds (various species...I swear we had Christmas turkeys at the Easter trials ) are propelled from a thrower at Novice level. There are a few retrieving DOLers your way, laffi.....FHRP for one. Lablover is a serious trialler here in Vic and I'm sure she would know where you can get bumpers :p

Lablover
Laffi, Specialised dog equipment has an agent in NSW. Feel free to PM or Email me for their information. Order a few bumpers, as they are known to wander. BTW, there is a trial in Marulan (sp) in a few weeks. No idea how far that would be from Jannali. I am thinking of entering. What's another week away from home. My poor long suffering husband.
rubyroo
I have just purchased some dummies from the states, the suppliers here didnt have the firmness I was looking for (they were very soft) the only downfall from that was they ended up costing around $30 each, but well worth it, great quality and alot firmer than I had hoped. The Avery bumper is hex shaped and stops the dog rolling it around in their mouth, my boy has alot of chopps, they seem to get in the way of picking up round dummies, TBI bumpers are great, very firm and very reasonable. If you google Avery or TBI you will find their websites. Good Luck.

Staff'n'Toller
AFAIK- which isn't much if you go to a trial and offer to help out for the day and then ask nicely, they may let you take a couple of birds home at the end. Your other option is to locate Pigeon sales/auctions in your state but then of course you'll need to *dispatch* of them yourself.
rubyroo
Im still very new to the sport, you could ask the question about birds at this website: http://www.australianworkingretrievercentral.org.au/bb/ you may find someone close to where you are. The Spotted Devil
Laffi - if you can, do get out to a trial and volunteer to help. Over the Easter trials I was too busy going from stake to stake but I did get the chance to place blinds out for some restricted retrieves once I'd finished. I learned SO much in that short time.....you get to see how much harder it is for the dogs than it looks, particularly through water and terrain changes and you also get to see the full spectrum of handling in terms of how it affects the dog. Well worth it!
mollipop
You could go to an Obedience Trial that has a Gundog Working Test (a comp. that is somewhere between obedience and retrieving). Some of them use game instead of dummies and offer the birds to people to take home after competition. I have a couple in my fridge after the GR Club show yesterday. The Lab. Club are having their show next Sunday, 10th at Erskine Park and they use birds. There are several training days per year for retrieving and they sell dummies. Lablover
Does anyone know if there are any Gundog Working Tests in WA? Gundog working tests are always ?? held in conjunction with the various gundog breed shows/obedience trials etc. They are more alike obedience standards than retriving trials. If you do not gain a reply I could ask for you when I next speak to a WA friend. Let me know. Or if you a member of the WA body, contact them. FHRP
laffi, when you refer to a Gundog Trial do you mean a Gundog Working Test or a Retrieving trial?? I'll assume it's not a Field trial as I don't think they'd refer to single mark retrieves... GWT's are either on dummies (supplied by you) or pigeons (supplied by the club). Retrieving trials are done on game, usually pigeons (again supplied by the club).

FHRP
Lablover, does WA run on the same rules as SA? GWTs have state based rules and can differ from state to state. For example in Open in SA there's a double mark but in NSW we have a Double rise and a blind.

Gee in NSW you have a double rise and a blind, IN A WORKING TEST!!! Why not simply compete in retrieving trials? Please tell me the working test judges do not elect blind pick up first LOL(not that would be legal on a double rise in retrieving trials)

The retrieves are shorter than a retrieving trial, and terrain can be.... well.. non existant Although there are some good grounds which test the dogs well. Don't worry, there have been quite a few people who do retrieving trials that started out with GWT's, me included
