Pulling

Hi all

I have an 11mo whippet girl who just insists on pulling me the whole way through our walk. I have worked with her since I got her because of anxiety issues but this one problem has me beat.

I was using a whippet collar high up she still pulls, check rope (soft I made for her) - nup. She has a halti and doesn't pull but she hates it.

Her sister 24 mo whippet was a champion puller but got the idea really quick with a check chain, couple of corrections and she walks like a dream until a bush turkey or water dragon comes to tease her

Was thinking of using the infin8 or newtrix collars but I am not sure

she is only 8 kg of skin bone and muscle and very fine

What have you done training method wise to train her to stop pulling?

IMO an 8 kg 11 month old Whippet should not need any of those devices. Have you contacted a trainer or gone to any classes?

Have you tried being a tree. When the lead goes tight you stand still & don't move a muscle. Wait until she slackens off the lead & sits or drops give her a treat & praise & move off again. You may only get a couple of steps. You need to allow extra time for walks & to start off with you may not even get very far.

If you let her pull for even a step she'll try you out again & you have to start all over.

My dog is a PITA puller, still working on it a year on (she is fairly ok now). some dogs are just worse than others I suspect- however...

I use the quick about turn technique. When she starts to move ahead I will stomp loudly to mark the action and pivot on my foot and march in the other direction. She learnt very quickly she had to pay attention where I was or get pulled along. The stomp is a HUGE help in that all I have to do is stomp and it gives her a reminder.

Once she got better with this I was able to use the above "tree" technique as she was paying more attention.

Sorry I don't have much experience with the newtrix, other than needing to explore it for an assessment.

I have fitted quite a few infin8's and have used them on my dogs where necessary and I quite like them.

You may find that it helps with the anxiety as well if that is an issue outside of the home environment.

Cheers,

Mel.

An Infin8 is a halti with 'power steering' - ask its manufacturer.

I'd not be keen to see one on a breed with a slender neck like a whippet. I'm not keen on them at all actually.

I'd suggest you get some advice from a trainer. Dogs pulling on leads is a bread and butter issue for them and can usually be solved quick quickly with some instruction.
