The dog will probably be a bit quiet and sleepy for 24 hours or so, but after that she'll probably be back to normal. I offer a very small meal the evening they come home and they always eat it. Try to keep her reasonably quiet until the stitches come out and keep licking to a minimum. You won't notice any difference in her temperament or behaviour following desexing, she'll be just the same except that she's no longer able to produce.

As Miranda said she will be groggy when you bring her home in the late afternoon/evening. Give her a small meal of cooked chicken breast late in the evening and try to get her to have a drink of water, if she does't don't freak out.

She will have slept the drugs off by the next day and should be basically back to normal in the morning. Try to keep her quiet whilst her stitches are in. And no bathing or getting them wet!.

If you don't keep her quiet enough you might notice along the suture site go a bit hard and lumpy because of swelling. Also I have found that by the end of the two weeks the actual suture incision sights will get a bit inflamed basically because the body starts to reject them and possibly because a little bit of bacteria gets into them. This goes away within a day or so after the sutures are removed.

I have had a few bitches desexed recently and some do better than others.

Make sure the vet gives your girl some pain medication for the first 24-48 hrs after the op.

I found that after they get over this initial pain after the op. they are back to almost normal but need to be kept quiet as others have said and also keep the wound dry.

Remember to ask for your desexing certificate so you can get a discounted rate for council registration.

Take home pain meds are usually not necessary. Have had many bitches desexed and the only one that was given take home pain meds had just come off heat so the operation was more traumatic then a normal spay.

Yes keep an eye on her and if she starts to lick or show the stitches too much attention get an elizabethan collar on her as soon as possible, or try to discourage it. Chloe didnt touch her stitches, Sasha almost licked hers out - she's an obsessive licker (and they got infected) which was quite traumatic and painful for her.

Try to prevent her from being too active. When Stella was desexed (staffy) she was back to her normal active self after the first day and she started to develop a small bulge around the site where she had surgery, the Vet mentioned that if we hadn't have kept her still after that point when we recognised it she could have done some damage to layers of internal stitches that were required as a result of the surgery which could have been bad news for her.

I'd try to restrict her activity by at least 75% for the following couple of weeks just to be safe.
