How To Teach A Dog To Herd

Recommended Posts

Gsd and small head of cattle. Its nothing serious just to bring them in from down the back.

Start the dog on smaller less dangerous animals like sheep. Cattle can do a lot of damage to an inexperienced dog.

You are going to have to teach him to cast, gather and drive.....Heading would be good but thats up to the dog.

My advice would be find someone you can take him to that can asess him and teach you what you need. I know there are some very good people on this list.

Hi,

My name is Jenny and I organise Working Dog Clinics at Uralla (near Armidale NSW) for R & J Livestock Services. The clinics are designed to help people like you so they can use there dogs on their own properties or participate in the variety of dog sports around Australia. It is one on one with the instructor, you, your dog and the sheep. The next clinic is at Uralla Showground on the 11 & 12 July and we have 2 Queensland people coming down already. If you would like to know more I can be contact at my email on [email protected] I actually started herding with a GSD about 4 years ago and I get a lot out of these types of clinics. Good luck with whatever you do but professional advice is a must.
