Where To Buy Lens For Nikon D200

So today I finally purchased my first ever DSLR. I had been trying to decide between buying the Nikon D90 (something I could grow in to) or the D40 (to cut my teeth on before upgrading to something better). Anyway, Harvey Norman were doing the D40 kits for $549 plus an extra 10% off, so I headed up to grab one... but came home with a D200 body as they were on sale for $1099. So now I need to buy a lens, preferably 18-55 to start out with.

Does anyone know any good sites that sell either secong hand lenses or new ones at a good price?

So far the cheapest I have found is $249 on this site:

Thanx. :cheer: I drove my OH made trying to decide between getting an entry level or the D90 or Canon 50D & then I ended up getting none of them. :)

I'm sure there will be lots of Diesel pics while I am learning to use this camera... just need to get a lens & I am all set!

Do yourself a favour and buy a 18-200. It will do all the ranges perfectly indoor and outdoor. Awesome choice for the D200

welcome to the Nikon club!!! Wish i knew you were buying one, Im good mates with the dude from NOB, nikon on broadway in sydney. They are the cheapest for lenses and equipment. Read the reveiws for the 18-200

Im with Rugger, start out with something that has a wider range, and the 18 - 200 will cover so much more than the 18 - 55

I got a 18 - 250 macro tamron lense at HN for $800 not sure if that is a good price. I got my 5omm 1.8 from ebay brand new for $190 it is an awesome little lense, there is a thread with shots from the 50 mm, check it out!!

Hmm I'm sure many people will tell you, don't put a $200 lens on a $1000 body!

Why not?? I love the 50mm and it takes awesome photos!! Do any other here with D40 D80 D90 etc have the 50 mm

ILuvAmstaffs, if you're near Drummoyne, European Camera Specialists have this listed second hand, probably worth checking out:

Nikkor 18-70mm/f3.5-4.5 AF-S DX Lens #4178311 c/w Lenscaps, Lenshood and original packaging - (Excellent+) $425

Alternatively, Camera Action has the 18-55 /3.5-5.6 DX ED Li brand new for $135 , they're in Melbourne but i've ordered and shipped from them before without any problem. Eta: the VR version is $225

The only thing to keep in mind if considering the 50mm is that the D200 is DX format so you'll have to take into account the increased focal length.

Glad your reading up on them, Im sure you will enjoy your camera no matter what.

In relation to the cheap lens on a good body, RA, its mainly all about selling yourself short and as someone else mentioned, you can get great cheaper lenses, but its true, the lenses maketh the camera :happydance2: (well after the photographer)

I think between DPReview, Ken Rockwell & a few other forums I confused myself sufficiently to end up just making the decision to get the best camera I could afford with any lens & then work out what I need in the future. I have to say, Ken Rockwells user guide on the D200 is a lot easier to read than the actual Nikon manual. :happydance2:

Of course your selection in lenses will depend on what you actually want to photograph

Portrait = I'd go for the 28-70 f2.8 if you want a good lens - either Tamron or Nikon depending on your budget

All rounder = Failing that the 18-200 for $900 odd is pretty good, but not too impressive at low light when on full zoom and can be quite slow to focus.

Low light = The 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 is great but you have to move!

Zoom = 80-200mm F2.8 is one of the best... new Nikon VR G version is expensive, and you can do with the older AF-S for high speed at low light.

Flash = I'd also look at getting the SB-600 (or 800 or 900 depending on budget) to get a better flash than the built in one

I started out with the 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens, but now I basically use my Tamron 28-105mm f2.8 and looking at getting the 80-200mm f2.8 to go alongside it for the longer zoom. In fact I might be selling both of them once I get the new zoom lens care of Mr Rudd! (Does the stimulus package still count if I spend it on a grey import?).

Even at F11 I can tell the difference between the $300 lens and the $1000 lens. Apart from the wide angle, I have no use for the 18-28 range, and if I want wider, I've taken to the 28mm F2.8 and using photostiching!

D200 is a fantastic camera to start with, I've got a D80 which I love! Its the lenses I am needing to improve! I haven't even thought about the D90 or D300 as I'd rather upgrade the lenses!
