Help Needed For Training Pug !

hi guys

ive got a 3.5 year old Female Pug.

currently we are training her to potty in places we want her to toilet.

AND, getting her to sleep in the doggie bed on the floor beside us.

Problem:Previous owner locked her out during the day & let her out potty in the backyard. So shes used to that.

now, we dont live in somewhere with alot of access outside. especially during the day. Need her to potty in a certain spot.

(i am buying a doggie Loo in a few days) So any tips on getting her to both no#1 & no#2 on the same pet toilet/loo?

She does it in a usual 2 spots but before bed and early in the morning she has a habbit of dropping a rock in the lounge room carpet and wee there also.

i know the usual, get a newspaper handy, if she does it ...give her a bit of a pat with it. but what if she has done it without us knowing minutes a go?.....im guessing take it to the spot that is prefered?

Problem:Previous owner let her sleep on the bed at night. to me thats not preferable. but she can sleep beside me on the floor.

we bought her a little doggie bed. she seems to know that we want her there...because when we point her to the bed...she goes there. But shes very sneaky...she watches us fall asleep and keeps an eye on us. and when we do, she jumps on.

what can we do? i understand this needs persistancy and patience... which is fine.

but like i said... i need guidance and knowledge here.

please help lily the pug!

Do you mean your hitting the dog with a newspaper if you catch her messing on the floor? If thats what you mean you shouldnt be doing it all your doing is frightening the dog and youll find shell go somewhere and do it when your not looking. What you should be doing is hitting yourself over the head for not watching her and taking her outside.

Oops I just read that you want her to toilet inside not outside :confused:I dont know how youd train a dog thats used to going to the toilet outside to go inside. It must be totally confusing for the dog.

Probably one of the trainers will be in to help you soon.

pet loos are overpriced

I recommend a large shallow container and paper based cat litter.

The best thing you can do is buy a crate. Pop her in the crate at night and as soon as you open it in the morning put her on the doggy loo or outside. It will help with both the bed issue and the toilet issue.

Wash where she has already been in something like biozet or urine off to remove the smell, and leave a few grains of litter in the box with her smell on it so she knows where to go. If you have carpet I would wash it with those hirable carpet washers Safeway have and give it a good rinse with hot water a couple of times after the shampoo.

as soon as she slips into a routine she will be easy to handle.

Re the hopping up on the bed issue, put a cat bell or something somewhat noisey on her collar so that you can hear her when she jumps onto the bed and then promptly put her back down on her own bed.

If you're a light sleeper like me, that should work fine, if you're a heavy sleeper, then it may not work.

I had my 2 dogs in a large laundry at one stage and then I allowed them into the bedroom on their beds. I put a light puppy crate round their beds to let them understand that is where theyare to sleep. I had the pen so it was easy. After a while I took the pen away and they would stay put.

Though at odd times one dog would slink onto the bed. The cat is allowed on the bed so I would have to reach down in the dark and feel the bed sneaks face to see if it was the cat or the dog. If I felt dog I would laugh and tell him to get off. This was good as when I travel now they will stay put and sleep whereever they are put crated or penned.

Don't know about the toileting. Would you teach the dog to use the toilet thing-oh you provide outside? And then move the toilet thing-oh inside?

Hope you get some useful advice. So you just got your dog? I too would never punish her for mistakes. It is hard when she is not able to just walk outside. I have a male who waits all night easy to toilet. But the chi x foxy girl can't and wakes me up most nights to go outside. I rent so a dog door is not on. We have it down pat but lucky I am one of those people who doesn't have any hassle going back to sleep again.

She looks very cute!

thanks guys

i dont think confinement helps

because she is usually kept in the large kitchen most of the day when we go to work.

she ALWAYS does no#1 and no#2 in 2 different spots.... which is ok for now...

but as soon as we open the door to other rooms.....she tends to get confused.

no#2 seems easier as you can move the plop to where you want her to do it and keep showing her

but no#1.... is it even possible?

because when we catch her doing it....we yell out but its just too late.

i suppose either wiping the scent on the new Dog loo or spray the scent spray there daily?
